I'm in shock

I posted a while ago about discovering that my ds (age 5, deaf, SPD and challenging behaviour as yet not dx) has a talent for photography which actually helps control his behaviour as well. The beginning of September he came 2nd in a local under 14's photo competition which I was so chuffed about. Well, today we were contacted by the RHS (royal horticultural society). A different photo of his they have shortlisted in their photo competition. I'm in total shock. He's clearly good, I just hadn't realised how good. I really wanted to share this news with you all because you've all been so supportive over the years and you'll understand how having a child like ours being able to excell at something means so much more. He still can't read, he can barely write, doesn't understand his peers in the playground and he isn't fully toilet trained but OMG he's better than every single one of them with a camera Grin. This is very very special to me and I'm so proud.

That is fantastic:):)
I also second getting him a really good camera.. If he isn't using a digital SLR (personal fave is a Canon 550D or similar..mines an older model but still great) because they can make the difference between a good photo and an amazing one..and he has the natural talent! Also macro lenses and maybe a zoom... my lenses are mostly non canon as they are very expensive but built up a a period of time he would have a camera to take him a long way:)

You must be SOOOO proud of him:)!!!

I've put a few photos on here, its quite slow to upload.

He's got a little point and shoot (Canon PowerShot A495) which certainly wasn't that price when we bought it in April Shock.

We've discussed getting him a better camera but he's only little and a big SLR would be heavy for him. Plus he's not exactly careful with the camera sometimes, he see's it as a toy to a certain extent and its been dropped a fair amount. I'm going to try and speak to school about getting him some tutoring in this though because we're out of our depth. We can't teach him all the stuff about photography because we don't know it.

Lougle Your dd sounds so lovely. What a wonderful gift to have a singing voice. You can thrill and calm minds and hearts with a beautiful voice. As you say, her having something that she can do is such a big thing.

lisad123 Those pictures are amazing Smile. I particularly like the birds.

Our children really do amaze us and make us proud in the most unexpected ways don't they Smile.

Congratulations mini Rebl. That's really inspiring.

auntevil · 05/10/2011 18:01

The pictures are beautiful - i'm not surprised at how proud you are. Smile

I'm a great believer in that if you lose or don't have one of your senses, that your body compensates and gives you more talent in other areas. I say this as someone that has no sense of smell, but i can tell if milk is off by its colour as my eyes are very aware of subtle changes. So maybe your DS has a more highly developed sense of vision for composition, light and colour? Whatever the reason, well done minirebl

He's only five and he saw off a load of teens with his photo's!!!, you have a very gifted son there OP, I think you should blow his trumpet even more and put some of his works of art on here for us all to see (I'm curious about the spider one tbh).

And give your amazing boy a very awesome treat too! he sounds fantastic!!!

GossipWitch · 06/10/2011 23:33

whoops didn't read to the last part of the thread, off to have a look.

GossipWitch · 06/10/2011 23:36

Wow a 5yr old took those? fantastic!!!

I once let my son have a camera for a school residential when he was 7, I haven't got the film developed because he told me he took photo's of his friends bums...

OhMyGolly · 07/10/2011 00:05

Well done, lovely photos, so much better than any I have managed to take, well composed and beautiful. Glad he is getting recognition.

chickensaresafehere · 07/10/2011 12:05

Grey24 · 07/10/2011 17:10

rebl - I was so pleased to hear about your DS's success, that I have braced myself to view the spider, despite my phobia! It's a great photo, and it's fantastic that his skills have been appreciated by others. Thank you for sharing.

Ben10WasTheSpawnNowWeLoveLego · 07/10/2011 17:39

I can't believe how wonderful your son's photos are. My DS is 6 and any photos he takes are of the TV or really really close up on my face Grin. He really has a wonderful way of communicating how he sees the world :)

MangoMonster · 07/10/2011 19:37

Really amazing photos! Crazy good! Grin
