Also has empathy and verbal reasoning problems but she doesnt suspect ASD.

Been telling "professionals" since he was 5 that he was dyslexic...maybe they will listen now

Not really sure what now though. I suppose the dyslexia association (is there one - there MUST be?)

could a SALT help him with communication and verbal reasoning? With empathy thats an ongoing one for my ds and as we havent really got fully into therapies I dont know other than we are practicing feelings with happy/sad faces at home to help him understand how we are feeling and how he is feeling.

Have you seen a pead? what have the other proffessionals considered are his issues.

star Not really. Been telling everyone since he started year 1 he was dyslexic, so no shock as such, but very sad to see it confirmed and that it has taken 3 years and a shit load of money we could ill afford

coff We have our 2nd appt with the private paed on weds. Not sure what he will say but he thought ds1 had dyslexia too, so he wont be surprised.

So you havent noticed any problems with empathy? DS totally doesnt get the feelings of others. Only recognises upset if visual tears are involved but will not necessarily back off. If naughty will not apologise to anyone unless at the end of a full meltdown but doesnt "get" that he has upset anyone in his path just the fact that "he is upset".....

If you havent noticed it going on in everyday life, I would really ask to speak to the EP regards to this and that because this hasnt been brought to your attention before it has come as a shock. See what she says and what her overall view is. Also speak to the school and ask how they came about this empathy decision and what brought it about. It could be just that he didnt care the teacher was pissed off with him lol or they are mistaking his frustrations at refusing encouragement during reading or writing. (trying to make you feel better here but probably failing )

Yes empathy is one of the traits of ASD as is verbal reasoning. But it could be linked to his dyslexia causing his frustrations maybe?

He has always been such an affectionate boy, caring, gets upset if others get upset...am really mystified by it tbh

Speak to the school/EP to put your mind at rest. He is struggling bless him and this is at school where the dyslexia is causing problems due to work. This is probably causing him the most grief and if he has been missunderstood due to them not spotting the dyslexia they would be encouraging him to do something that he just cant do right now. And there is probably no way he could explain why he cant hence the verbal reasoning side of things.

Have a word with the pead and see what she can suggest with the dyslexia first and what help he can have (I dont know as not any experience in this with DS) Maybe all else will improve in time as he gains confidence

Dyslexia is only a symptom of one of three conditions, an auditory processing disorder which is diagnosed by an audiologist, a visual processing disorder which is diagnosed by an optometrist, an attention disorder which is diagnosed by a psychiatrist, or any combination of the three disabilities.
You need to find out which of these issues the Ed Psych identified as the possible underlying cause of your DSs dyslexic symptom.

I keep on forgetting this research paper which may explain some of the links between ASD and dyslexia.

Please also consider a full speech and language assessment. Many students with dyslexia also have receptive or expressive language impairments and this might explain some of the features that you are hearing about from EP.
