ADHD and homework!!!

How do you get your ADHD dc to do homework?? Should they have to do it?

Feeling very sorry for my ds (8) who literally has a full on melt down even when I suggest doing 2 sums or 1 sentence at a time.

Feel like asking his teacher not to bother sending homework home!!

Ive just come on here after another disastrous homework session. Ds is 4 1/2 and has autism. The second I get his homework out theres a massive kick off. I've tried really hard to keep it all light & set it up so that he just has to stick stuff in but it's still a nightmare. On one hand I want it to look good, on the other there's no point fibbing to the school about what he can do as they know what he's like. One of the weird issues we have is that when we finally get something on paper he's dead set on scribbling it out. We can get on board with the reading but the writing

Interesting. DS1 attends an ASD Base where most children has a dual dx of ADHD (DS1 doesn't). They don't do homework, ever. They do extra work in class instead- each drops a lesson (mine drops Welsh as we are English and can't really help anyway) and does the work then and if needed also in lunch breaks. It's mainly about context ('home'work is a naff term, it's school work isn't it, home is another place entirely- and never the twain shall meet, not unless you want a bunfight anyway). DS2 has suspected ADD and he doesn't seem able to carry school into home as a concept either: difficult in year 6 but guaranteed detentions in year 7 so we will see what happens.

Indiastar my ds is in year 4 and has reading every night and homework once a week. Basically, he doesn't get TV or leisure time until it's done. He gets half an hour when he gets in from school to 'chillax' as he put it and then we read for 10/15 minutes. I also take a turn in reading a few pages so the story can flow faster. Homework at the weekend is treated the same way "Let's get this done or no 'you time' " seems to work for us. Failing that, bribe them with a treat .. what the hell. Good luck!

Just come back to this thread. Thanks for all the replies. Unfortunately bribery does not work at all either! Will just have to struggle on-or do it myself . Poor thing has enough to deal with at school!
