Aspergers in Vogue!

The Oct issue of Vogue (with the photo of Jimjams/SJP ironing ) had an interesting article in it (i only bought it for the shoe supplement!). Jill Dawson is the mother of a boy with Aspergers and the article talks a bit about AS, her son's diagnosis etc but also about a book she has just written called "Wild Boy" about a boy found in France 200 years ago who had been living alone in the woods. The idea is put forward that this boy was the first person who can be recognised as having autism. The book is a novel but written about the wild boy (Victor) and a local Dr who worked day and night with him for 6 years, determined to bring out his sociable side and teach him to be "normal". He developed a way of working with him that impressed an Italian educationalist so much that she based her schools on it - Maria Montessori!
This reminded me that I heard a long time ago, and don't know if its true, that the beginnings of ABA were based on how Helen Keller had been taught????????????

I read an article about that novel a few weeks ago, Davros, and wrote about it here though I seem to have killed the thread, I'm afraid. What does ABA stand for?

What were the shoes like Davros? I am searching high and low for a stylish comfortable pair that I walk for miles in. All I seem to be able to find are stilletoesSad

Sorry Suedonim, didn't remember you mentioning the book and only just got round to reading that Vogue.

Flo2, ABA = Applied Bahvioural Analysis. A teaching method pioneered in the USA for teaching individuals with learning difficulties and/or behavioural problems. In the UK it is much more identified with autism although I know several people using it to teach their SEN children who are not autistic. For some further info look at www.peach.org.uk (can't get link to work). That photo on the opening page is my son (a few years ago) and there's a few more of him on the website

Now for the important stuff - The shoe supplement is full of fantasy/luxury shoes, Manolos, Jimmy Choos, Ginas etc plus a few Ravel, Office. They are sorted into sections, e.g. black & white, VERY high heels, ankle straps, satin. There's a few pairs at c. £50, mostly £200-£300 and one pair for £2,130 (Hermes)!!!!!! Have you looked at the Naot Natural Shoe Store? Sure they might have something suitable or DMs?

Thanks for that Davros, you son is a little cutie - although he is most probably a bigger cutie nowSmile

Thanks for the shoe info tooWink I am so picky with shoes. Dh bought me some boots at the weekend but they have a 3in heel and although they are lovely they are a bit uncomfortable for walking about town in. Love how you always call me Flo!

Thanks for your kind words girls. Its quite hard to get good photos of him now as he makes more strange faces, I don't know if that means he's more expressive but its annoying!
