Are speech and intelligence linked?

I was asked the above and realized I don't really understand how they go together. I know there is a non-verbal IQ and presumably putting a puzzle together is a nonverbal from of intelligence. Do you need speech for abstract concepts, drama play (as developmental milestone). What's the relation between cognitive speech vs expressive speech in this regard?
Are the any publications/references put on this? Thks.

Oh my sociable, friendly, keen to communicate but limited tools of interaction ds1 does have ASD (severely), but ASD is many things anyway.

I think language is a skill like any other and its a strength for some and not for others but not necessarily linked to IQ.

Absolutely agree.

Interesting. DD1 is severely speech & language delayed. Definite learning disability. But amongst it, she shows flashes of brilliance. Her vocabulary is quite good, but her makaton signing is getting (imo) excellent.

Dd2 was non-verbal until 4.5, she's now 5.5 and still hardly talks (but through choice, she can talk very clearly when she wants too), despite her language being at the level of a 2 year old she is a year ahed with reading, writing and Maths, she's also a great puzzle solver. There are a few things she struggle with due to her communication/speach problems, she can not always follow verbal instructions (but give it to het with pictures and she's fine) and she struggles with the social side of things.

DD has SLI and it has been described as profound and affecting every aspeact of her learning BUT she was also assessed as having an above average intelligence when it comes to non verbal tasks. Of course it is impossible to unpick it all as she struggles with so many things because of the SLI and it affects her memory so severely but she is very obviously bright in some ways- and very fast.

Very interesting subject and uplifting to me in a difficult week!

Thanks for the Donna Williams stuff saintly - it's really interesting -

I love words as sounds and shapes, but verbal words fall away, tumbling like clouds in a windy sky. - how good is that?
