I only have a very small sample to draw on, but out of the children in Ds2's SN class, he is the only one who jabbers and babbles continually. He does use words to ask for the things he wants but the rest of the time he is making a huge variety of noises, nonsense (to us) syllable strings and repetitive sounds/words. We are so used to it that it barely registers as being unusual any more, but found myself wondering today how many other children do it. I'd also like to know if he will always do it or whether its something that some children grow out of. Out of everything he does, it's probably the one that draws attention to him most as being different - although professionals have commented that its positive because an awful lot of it is made up of speech sounds.

DS had high functioning autism and he will make constant humming noises when he's on the move. It's quite handy if I lose sight of him when we're out and about, I just stand still and listen carefully.

It varies. My 15 year old dd is severely autistic and does make noises - particularly humming to block out the sounds of others. But she's likely to have Tourette's as well.

DS is 4yo, diagnosed ASD, and is described by others as moderate to severe in his autism. He makes noises too, but they're not constant. He sort of whirrs or recites long passages of text from books or narrative from TV episodes. I think he does it mostly at home, but he definitely does it when we are out too. I don't think he can control it. Sometimes he is so in his own world that he doesn't hear me when I tell him to stop. Sometimes he does hear me but simply won't listen to me telling him to stop.

To be honest, we spent so long waiting for him to talk and really thinking that speech would never come, that we love listening to whatever it is he has to say.

I am not promising that it will stay like this forever though Smile

Gosh, this is a blast from the past - never had a six year old thread commented on before!😁

As an update DS2 is now 14 and noisier than ever! More words, both intelligible/functional and unintelligible / apparently random. As he's got older his speech of all kinds has got more social - either requesting stuff or occasionally commenting, or trying to get us to repeat what he's saying. Eg. "Mummy......mummy.....mummy....
MUMMY! I Wolfie.....I wolfie.....I wolfie....Mummy! I wolfie" until I respond. 😁

My son is 2 years 8 months. He is being assessed for autism at the moment. He only started humming in December last year. Just one day he did it and couldn't stop. He also hand flaps and jumps on the spot a lot. In the last 2 months he has started to say words...lots of labelling things around the house. He has also learnt to count to 20 and the can say the full alphabet. If I write a letter or number he can tell me what it is but can't ask for a drink. Is this the way most autistic children are? It seems his humming has got a worse over the last few months and it seems to be worse if we go outside or somewhere new.
