Can the nursery ask DS1 to leave as he needs too much attention?

DS1 is 3 and has just moved up to the preschool section of his nursery. He has a severe S&L delay becuase of glue ear and is a bit of a "handful" at times.

The nursery seem to be struggling now the ratio is 1:8 (was 1:4 in the 2-3 class so quite a leap).

I have started the ball rolling regarding diagnosis of a possible ASD or something else and DS has a 1hr assessment with the HV on Tuesday.

Can the nursery ask him to leave becuase he is too much trouble?

Can I ask them to make some changes /allowances for him eg. try to make eye contact with him when they are giving instructions / repeat several times / in different ways?

Hi weakestlink what you are describing in your last reply sounds pretty much like my dd. (except for the food bit) she had a late diagnosis of a profound/severe hearing loss.
Do you have a hearing and vision support worker? (teacher of the deaf)
Having a s&l delay due to a hearing loss can equate to a "handful" of a child, not only are they 3, And dealing with everything a 3 year old has to at nursery, they also can't communicate effectively, which brings out the frustration and tantrums and meltdowns.
Insist that your nursery write a EIP, (you have to sign it), you can ask them to make changes to adapt to his needs, and insure that they actually do what they say they will do, become "that nagging parent" if you have to.
They have to allow him the means to communicate effectively it is discrimination if they do not.
Have you contacted the NDCS? They are so helpful.

Hi aloe! Does your DD have glue ear? I forgot to add that DS had grommets last year and so his hearing is normal now but S&L still delayed.... He is due a check up in Sept/Oct so will check they are still in place and the glue has not returned.

Sorry I seem to be adding stuff as I go! The HV said she would have expected more S&L development since grommets which makes her think there is more going on.....

It's a shame it's the summer hols as the portage service will be really useful for us! I hope DS qualifies as I'm sure they are very stretched with cutbacks etc....

We have portage involved and they came this morning! They don't just do term time. :)

No not glue ear, dd2 has a sensori-neuri loss. Profound in one ear and a "reverse cookie-bike" loss mix of severe, mild and profound across the ranges on the other side, looks like a mountain peak on their graphs. (how she passed screenings).

Dd2 speech has not come on as much as audiologists anticipated.

If you feel portage would help you really need to push for it, and make every one of your professionals refer you. (for behavioural issues).
Dd was good as gold for them last week (very unlike her) but this week the portage worker picked up on some of dds "oddities"

(possible like AS tendencies, although worker did agree without committing that they were worth noting)

Maybe it differs from area to area because ours def is term time only as it says so on the leaflet :( Once we go to Child Development Centre I will ask them to do a referral too... How often are they going to come to you?

They called me today and I thought wow great (only referred yday!) but they were only calling to say the Community Paediatrician could not see DS until December :( Have decided to get a private diagnosis though (our insurance will pay) so at least we know what we're dealing with here. Only just got name of consultant in London from my other thread but will be calling first thing to book first available appointment.

Feeling slightly more positive now and CDC said DS could see their SALT v soon.

They are doing an initial set of 6 once weekly visits at home, but she was talking today about going into dd's preschool, so may well be longer.

weakestlink · 03/08/2011 20:20

Oh that sounds fab! Hope we get it too! Are you waiting on any other referrals?

Had to chase for an MRI under ga,
And still waiting to see our proper development pead, he keeps cancelling on us. (well broke his hip, and then rearranged an appointment without telling us).
Sometimes it feels like it's one fight after another, and no decent answers. Everyone seems to be putting everything down to her being deaf, and s&l delayed.
