i was shopping in my local ASDA earlier. I kept hearing this screeching noise, after a few minutes i decided to investigate it further and walked up and down the aisles.

At the magazine aisle i finally found the cause, there was a family with 3 children, one of the children - a boy who looked about 6/7 was sat in the seat of the trolley.

He was screeching and banging his head with his fists and groaning.
It was clear to me that this little boy was severely distressed and he seemed to be autistic, quite severley.

His parents were ignoring him and looking at things and all the while he was sat there screeching and crying.

I put my basket down and fled to the toilets and had a cry.

When i came out i decided to do my shopping and i couldnt hear the noise anymore.

My DS is Autistic - high functioning and i would NEVER EVER take him to a supermarket on a busy saturday afternoon and certainly not have him distressed like that.

I felt so sad for him, and very angry to his parents for just ignoring him.

Hope i havent offended anyone with my views but i couldnt stop thinking about it and started to get upset again when i was telling DH in the car on the way home.

Its difficult when something gets under your skin in RL and then again, but differently, on MN!

DS 'only' has AS, but when we go shopping he reacts very badly, doesn't matter how busy it is. Sometimes (usually) he just does a sort of hands and feet crawl (this kid is normally V V mobile), but sometimes he will scream, attack, whatever. Maybe this kid is like Sam, doesn't do shopping any other way? I have to admit with Sam I do tend to ignore it. Haven't yet worked out any other way of coping.

My Ds is also like yours peachy, he will run off, pick things up.im always finding things in the trolley at the checkout that i didnt put in,he will crawl under fruit and veg boxes and if he gets too stressed sit down and refuse to budge.

I try and avoid taking him now as i cant cope with supermarkets either so having to cope with him as well is a major strain.

My dad took him out for breakfast to tescos this morning and ds decided to fling his sausages round the cafe and crawl around on the floor picking them up and subsequently eating them!

Needless to say my dad has said he wont be taking him again for a while!

If we take Sam out for a meal, we take him near my Mum's, then we don't care what people think coz we won't see them again anyhow [bush]. he always makes a scene, we are almost used to it now. Stealing is his big issue. He just can't understand why not. We normally frisk him but occasionally we forget.

Ditto Peachy, the other week we decided to go out for sunday lunch.

Ds as usual wanted sausage and chips, when his meal came he took one look at the sausages and said "im not eating them" they did look a bit strange, anyway we persuaded him to take a bite which he then spat out on the table!

I had a bite and they werent very nice, ds is shouting "Ugh them sausages stink they stink" as you can imagine it was packed and EVERYONE was looking, the waitress came over and i told her that the sausages werent very nice.

She came back from the kitchen and said the sausages were seasoned with various herbs and spices and would DS like something else?

He of course said no and went into a massive sulk, when it came time for the desserts my niece who is 7 said "i want strawberry cheesecake but can you bring it to me first cos i need to sniff it!"

As you can imagine we made a sharp exit only when we were walking through the bar area ds said in a loud voice that he needed the loo because he had a sore bum!!

LOL! That sounds JUSt like a day out with Sam! Fun huh? We went to a pizze express recently and he threw the food on the floor, and spent the entire time shouting piggy and oinking. It was fairly quiet there thankfully (few people trying not to look) but we felt awful. Fortunately, the sales person was leaving that night and didn't care less. We swore we'd take him nowhere again, but you know, the rest of us need a life too and if we're away from home, as we frequently are, we can't ALWAYS live on Safeway sausage rolls eaten in car parks.

I know . Fortunately he spent the next three hours chained up.

NB: should point out it was a SAFETY chain on a carnival float. Which he loves. Nonetheless, it can have added advantages

No- thank GOD! I found a pair in his coat pocket this morning. Clean at least. And fairly plain, I think I may lock any interesting-ish pairs away now. PMSL
