When I went to collect Sam from school yesterday I was informed that Sam had hurt someoneand could I come in to discuss tonight? Went in and - wowee- the SENCO was there!!!!

She sat down and said 'I understand you had concerns about Sam's development and that's why you went to BIBIC?' (we had sent over a set of Sam's assessment notes).

'Uh no, he had a dx of AS back in April'.

Oh.

Nobody had told her!

The upshot was that they are getting a visual timetable by Monday (!!), theya re referring to OT, they will refer to Ed Psych in the New Year (after they have collectd evidence) and we have a school action plan, which will go up to School Action Plus when he has a Welsh DX (apparently the welsh / english thing stands as definite).

Sam's class Teacher looked more and more dejected every time something she needed to do was mentioned. I do feel for her, I know it is a nightmare being a Teacher these days, but it's not Sam's fault, and if you teach you should be aware that some kids will have SN.
She kept saying tjngs like 'Sam doesn't do it here' and the SENCO would stare her in the eyes and say @yes but he overloads during the day and that causes problems at home so it's still our job to help with the routine', or 'but Sam doesn't have any friends who are close' (they're doing a buddy scheme so someone can help him detect an overload)- at which both I and the SENCO stared at her witheringly. Um, that's the point love! The Teacher clearly didn't know what AS was, but SENCO seemed very with it.

So we are . it's been a good week anyhow, as DH was praised hugely at work by his managers for his work since his depression lifeted, and Friday is our annual night out. But knowing Sam is finally getting some help- like christmas has come!

Woohoo that is great news peachy. Good luck with it all The right help can make such a difference - I don't recognise my ds now when I compare him to how he was last year with no support.

Perhaps you should offer to help the teacher set up time tabling etc. That way you know its being done and you can also help. Maybe give a brief bullet point paper of Sam's needs so that she does not feel overwhelmed with paperwork.

Glad you feel like you are being listened to now.

I have offered, and we have a review date set for the last week ofterm so i can monitor it, and a home school book too. I don't think she is AGAINST it all, she does seem nice most of the time and Sam generally adores her. It could well be that she was kept behind by the Senco (at Senco's request not ours, short notice for us too) on her birthday!

I did make her a very nice card though.

Great news. Hopefully the teacher might become more understanding when she learns more about AS. SENCO sounds very competent. I am pleased for you
