Any advice on travel insurance for a child with Down's please?

Hi,

I've finally persuaded my dh that we should attempt to go on holiday somewhere for the first time since dd was born (she'll be c. 18 months when we go). We were thinking of maybe going on a mediterranean cruise from Southampton for a week - as I'm not brave enough to attempt flying with dd yet & they have a full medical team on board just in case!

Does anyone know if we will need to pay a premium to insure dd & if so roughly how much? and are there any specific questions I should be asking re: cover when we take out the policy?

Any other tips on travelling with a 1 year old will also be greatly appreciated! :)

Tricky question to answer as DS is such a broad spectrum. It will really depend on what specific difficulties your dd has i.e does she have a heart condition, is she having ongoing issued with feeding, etc??

Anymedical conditions need to be disclosed to the insurance company. SOme will accept and others won't.

It would also depend on the nature of your ds's difficulties as to whether the medical team on board would be sufficient to deal with any medical emergency she may have. They tend to be general medics, not paediatric docs or surgeons.

However if she is reasonably healthy generally there shouldn't be any problem at all.

We have our insurance through the bank and previously we couldn't get anyone to insure our son due to his complex conditions and they have insured him no problem for a small additional fee.

DD is now relatively healthy, she was born with heart problems but both holes have now healed. She really shouldn't need the medical team, but after she was blue lighted into hospital a few months back with croup, I just like the reassurance of knowing one is there just in case... (can you tell she's my PFB?? )

Because DD was refused private medical insurance when she was born, I was worried that travel insurance worked in the same way, so it's good to see that it doesn't seem to be the case.

You can try All Clear or your bank too. Best to shop around :)
