rumours that AIT causes damage

Dolfrog I think you have been misinformed.

AIT Clinical Studies

Our review of the available literature on Auditory Integration Training has produced 23 studies with positive results and only 3 claiming no benefits from AIT. While none of the research done thus far on AIT is of Nobel Prize quality, the positive studies are far more credible than those with negative results. As we point out in our comments, the 3 studies that claim no benefits are deeply flawed, with conclusions that are not supported by the research procedures nor the research data.

Is auditory integration training safe? This was the research and resulting paper which caused the official support for AIT by ASHA.

And in your link there are no research references after this date, and it is a marketing web page, so if they had more recent research to support their program they would provided it. So the question marks still remain, and the program providers do not seem to have been able to provide evidence based clinical research trials to counter these issues. I would suggest you ask AIT to provide some post 1998 independent research data, published in internationally recognised research journals that answer these questions.

should read
This was the research and resulting paper which caused the removal of official support for AIT by ASHA.

Dolfrog - that link doesn't take me to an article. All I get is a page saying 'Is auditory integration training safe?'

Are you able to link to the actual article?

dolfrog · 09/06/2011 21:28

IndigoBell

like many research papers of that period the links are not always available, but if you contact the researcher I am sure he may be able to provide some link to or may be a copy of the paper. You could contact him via the CAPDListserve.

DS did AIT few months ago at age 4 and although it helped a bit didnt resolve all issues and his APD so he was identified as an ideal candidate for the Listening programme. Still havent decided if we are doing it or not.

IndigoBell · 10/06/2011 07:03

Dolfrog - you haven't read the article, or even the abstract? All you know of it is the title? But you know it claims that AIT can cause harm? And you know the study was a good one? Better than the 23 studies that showed positive results?

Indego
If you look at the preceding studies which supported AIT you will see included the name of the researcher who also identified the possible problems and questioned the safety aspects. It is how research progresses, the more research you do the more you understand the complexities of the issues, and sometimes identify why something which had previous been viewed as a good thing for all could if fact only be a good thing for some and a bad thing for others. When i started to research APD and talk to these researchers the AIT issues were considered done and dusted.
So the safety issue is about does this program work for all, answer NO, in which case how do we define those who will benefit from this program, answer technically not possible, and how do we define those who will not benefit from this program but may be expected to benefit if they used the program, again not technically possible. And if a child is expected to benefit fro m a program but is not cognitive able to this damages their self esteem, and the begin to doubt their own abilities etc.

I have had many long discussion with the researcher who wrote that report, and his fellow international researchers over a number of years regarding all issues related to APD, and it has been long accepted that there are no programs that can provide support for all, and that all these types of programs can only provided a basic form of help and can only help a limited number who have auditory processing issues.
Each person who has these types of problems and each one has different ways of work around their problems due tot their different alternative compensating cognitive strengths.
So you really need to go back to basics and research these issues in depth, and not rely on the marketing information of a single program which may have provided your child with some help.

IndigoBell · 10/06/2011 17:31

I don't need to research these issues, because both my children's auditory problems are now cured.

You're the one struggling with a life long disability..... My children ain't.

dolfrog · 10/06/2011 17:45

Well if they had Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), then may be you should take your findings to the Medical Research Councils Institute of Hearing Research and tell them about your cure, it will save them a great deal of time and effort.
I look forward to reading about this marvelous cure in the international research journals and international media.
Meanwhile i will avoid miracle cures and deal with reality.

lol wow such hostility im not going to comment as i have read intensly on this subject and im not expecting a miracle but i do believe your ill informed and some of your informations deffinately incorrect but if anyone is going to be so anti theres no point talking about it further which is a shame and i find it rather odd and once again i repeat they do not ever claim they can help ALL and im not going by marketing research at all im going by what ive read in research papers and from others i know who have tried it and their personal experiences a lot of this is outdated information and what is health and safety passed in the uk is obviously different in the usa the uk being reknown for being much more strict in this area than majority of countries
