Dsylexia - what should the school be doing?

What can/should the school do to help a newly diagnosed dsylexic 8 year old?

My friend's DD, not mine, but we were just talking on the phone and I thought I would ask MN for advice. She doesn't know where to start and has a meeting with the school later this week.

Also what can the parents do to help and support the child?

Thanks in advance for any advice...

Toe By Toe is a great little book. My local schools use the book for any struggling reader and they have great results. I used it for my grandaughter and her reading age improved by 6 years but it took nearly twelve months to complete (using it 20 mins every day Mon-Fri) Let them have the weekend off.Toe By Toe was featured Secret Millionaire. Adults can learn to read with it too.

The next step is to identify the underlying cognitive causes or causes of the dyslexic symptom. AS each different cognitive subtype of dyslexia requires different support options.

The school should provide the child with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) and adhere to it. The school is legally obliged to provided additional help for children with a Specific Learning Disability. The parents may need to put pressure on the school to make sure they are making the right provision.

Have you seen the Barrington Stoke books? www.barringtonstoke.co.uk. They have been on the go for ages and there is basically (in my opinion) nothing as good out there for helping with reading at home. I think it's so important that reading is made fun and these books are by really amazing authors but with all sorts of clever stuff like cream paper that make them dyslexia friendly. I should be on commission but I'm not - I just know the difference they can make.
