Thomcat's posts about Lottie are always lovely! My niece has DS, and is very severely disabled. She is lovely, but at the age of 10 she has the developmental age of a toddler, and it is uncertain whether she will ever talk (she shows a very small interest in signing), or pass a number of other developmental milestones (although we suspect some of this is her choice to some extent, she is very stubborn!). We all love her very much, but she is challenging, and requires a lot of personal care. She is also completely double jointed, and can contort into the most amazing shapes! Her older brother is epileptic and autistic, and to be honest this is more challenging and difficult for the family. His diagnosis of epilepsy didn't come until he was about four, and the AS one until he was eight or so. I guess I just wanted to say that DS has a variety of presentations (so for example my niece has no significant health issues, apart from being prone to infections), and also that having children is always a risk, we tend to concentrate on things that can be diagnosed prior to birth, but there are many things that don't show up until much later. Sorry, this all sounds very depressing, and I didn't want to come across that way, just that there is more than one outcome possible. Anyway, good luck Donna, I hope that all goes well for you.
