Hi! My 9 yr old nephew has been diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome for 3 yrs and moved house shortly after diagnosis. He has been at his current skl for 2 yrs and still hasn't got a statement even tho' this has been recommended. He is part of a separate nurture group and receives 1-1 support. He is frequently sent home from school due to aggressive outbursts, both @ staff and other children in the "nurture group". Mum has been promised that the SENCO wud be writing a statement for him for over 18 months but every time the meeting is re-arranged or she is "off sick". He has now been excluded for 3 days and my sister is @ her wits end and doesn't know where to turn. I have recommended Parent Partnership to her for her advice in getting the skl to face up to their responsibilities. Any advice on what else she can do to get him the help he deserves???

Chezza, she can request statutory assessment for a statement directly to the LA herself, she doesn't need to wait for the school to do it, and it's often better if the request comes from the parents as there are stronger rights of appeal. Have a look on the SOS SEN website and the IPSEA website for information and model letters. If he's getting regularly excluded then the current level of support isn't working, he may be in the wrong school. Sad I have to go out but others will have good advice, I'm sure.

A SENCO can't write a statement, your sister could request a statutory assessment using the template on the Ipsea website, at least this would get the ball rolling. I would also talk to Ipsea about the exclusion, your nephew has a diagnosis and maybe your sister could consider if reasonable adjustments have been made at school.

I think others who are more knowledgeable about Aspergers will be able to help more but it sounds like she should get the wheels in progress sooner rather than later.

I was writing at the same time as ellenjaneisnotmyname - our posts crossed.

tell her to apply for a statement herself, ipsea has a model letter and explains the process well. School don't write statements the sen department at the education authority do so she needs to apply directly to them.
