hi, does anyone know where you can get a young person's reading age assessed, I don't want to put my ds through a full ed psych assessment I just want to gauge if what school have said in the past about his progress is anything near accurate or if they have made it appear that he has made more progress than he had.

Tests all vary greatly as to what results they give.

Here's the burt reading test.

But I find it easier to judge by book bands if your school uses them. Do you know what colour book band he's on? They all equate to a NC level.

He's left school now Indigobell and has struggled at college, I think because significant underacheivement was identified in a private assessment, school may have given a very positive take on his progress and in effect he may have been set up to fail. Thank you for the link above :)

My son did the Burt reading test and scored 7 months above his actual age. When the EP carried out a reading age assessment, he was 18 months behind??? Not sure what it all means Hmm

There are so many different ways to measure reading that you can easily get that kind of a discrepancy.

Some just ask you to read words (like the burt), some ask you to read a passage, some ask you to read a passage and answer questions....

So the results do vary hugely.

I don't think this burt test is either good or accurate - but it's the only one I've found online :)

what about and i may be way off mark here just thinking alloud , what about taking him to an adult learning reading course and at least for a chat see if they can help / may be able to improve his reading or he will fail at college? or asking college to see if they can suggest anything , maybe see if someone there can test him a lot of fuss i know but less than EP's

Great idea smileandwave2000, I don;t know anyhting about adult learning reading courses, would I just look this up on a college website or is there somewhere else to look? I ahve requested an EP assessment but think this will be refused as most things are and I am thinking of asking the dyslexia centre to retest him to se if there is evidence that he has improved or gone back in his literacy.
