Private SALT - has it made a big difference?

DS is just about to turn 6 and after seeing paed & SALT agree that he probably has Semantic Pragmatic Langauge Disorder and likely to be on the spectrum. His SAL tests put him within the boundaries of age appropriate but behind on his word finding and higher level conversation. He also has the usual verb reversal problems etc. SALT recommended SAL sessions to help with this but admitted that because he wasn't urgent he would be on a very long waiting list. So....have been looking into private SAL sessions and one company charges about £60 per indiv session. Obviously this is alot of money to find but completely worth it if it helps.

I wondered if anyone could tell me their experiences of how it helped and whether we should we wait or not for NHS to start which is likely to be a year or so wait.

Thanks Smile

No advice really but if you have not had salt within the last 6 months can you not apply for the Cerebra grant of £500 towards private salt?? I hav just done this for my dd, sent off letter from paed confirming her issues and the letter saying we are on waiting list for SALT and got letter today saying they are processing my application and should hear within 4 weeks x

Hi there
It maybe that every borough is different but the SaLT provision from the NHS and the school in our borough have been useless (inexperienced SaLTs and very infrequent sessions)
So our son has had private SaLT fortnightly for the past 3 years. At his December annual assessment, he now finally has verbal scores within the normal range which is great progress from where he started. We pay 55 pounds for an hour session

Thanks Lynn - I think I'll do some enquiries, can't hurt Smile

Thank you for your replies.

We definately wouldn't be where we are today with DD#1 if it hadn't been for our private SALT. She has been beyond helpful teaching me how to help DD as well as working well with her. We have have very limited NHS therapy since DD was 3yrs old and pretty much every time seen a different therapist and the therapy has ended up being a reassessment every time before anything is done wasting precious time. Currently have not seen an NHS therapist for 2 years now due to restructuring of the service and a million other excuses. Frustrated? Yes!
