Prelim. ASD diagnosis for DS1, pregnant with DC2

I posted this originally on a different thread before I was directed here.

My 2 years and 2 month old son has just received a preliminary diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder. One of my (many) concerns is how best to ease DS1 into the idea of DC2. I am 10 weeks pregnant. Obviously, it's too early to tell him now and I was planning to around 6 months, when I am obviously pregnant. At about that time, I was also going to get the various bits of extra kit we will need for the baby and a realistic doll to role play with. We have started picture exchange, so I would also add some relevant pictures to that. We are also starting to gather some relevant books.

My best friend (DS1's godmother) has just had a baby, so I am taking the opportunity to expose him to her baby and talk about it with him.

I know a lot of people with children on the spectrum and new babies need to worry about noise/smell sensitivity. DS1 has mild noise sensitivity, but I don't anticipate that being a particular issue.

I am obviously gearing myself up to make sure DS1 continues to get plenty of attention and one-on-one time with both me and my husband, and thinking of strategies to entertain DS1 when I am breastfeeding, etc (e.g. a quiet book, box of treasure, CBeebies(!), etc).

Can anyone share their experiences? I know every child is different, but I'm hoping there might be some valuable nuggets out there.

My ds was 2 yrs and 4 months when his sister came along. Despite being HFA, he didn't appear to even notices until she was around 6 months and then she was just something to bounce roughly in her bouncing chair.

She LOVED watching him though and was very tolerant. Eventually, when she could move she followed him everywhere and it was then that the problems started as she interefered with his things. But she was robust by then.

Sorry about your dx.

Hi - congratulations on your pregnancy :)

My boys have a similar age gap to yours.

We did as you described - except he never showed any interest in the role play / dolls.

The best thing for us was a social story, and several books designed to introduce toddlers to new baby. His favourite 2 were the Usbourne sticker book - a new baby - and topsy and tim and the new baby.

Our social story discussed that babies could be noisy and babies could be smelly :)

My DS has quite a noise sensitivity, which caused real problems in the car when DS2 would scream blue murder due to reflux - not a happy combination! DS1 now has ear defenders like these and took a while to accept them so may be an idea to get some now to introduce them if you think they may help. He will now, go a stage further and use noise cancelling head phones and listen to a dvd.

The best distraction for Bf'ing time for us was youtube! He watches videos of brio train sets and steam trains - and cbeebies website / websites of his fave programmes. Of course that means little opportunity for mumsnetting . . . . .

Good luck - it wasn't as hard as I expected :) Mostly he ignored the new baby (until he got mobile but that's a different story!)

Whoops - link here for ear defenders

My DS2 was 2.9 when DS3 was born. TBH he completely ignored him, wouldn't look at him, but didn't hurt him or anything. He was non verbal at that age so books and social stories were beyond him. DS2 is hypo sensitive (under sensitive) to most sensory stimulus so smells didn't bother him. He hated the crying and used to get cross, though. I just made sure he got lots of attention and activities (including how to operate the VHS player!) He started a special early years school when DS3 was 6 months which helped a lot! They are now 11 and 8 and get on fine, only normal sibling stuff. DS3 really 'gets' DS2 and is the best social interaction there is. It has been a really positive experience, despite the rocky start. HTH

Gap of 4.7 years here. DD1 didnt mind DD2 except for the noise.

They're 7.6 and 2.9 now - not much has changed really.

Both have HFA dx.
