Any ideas? Don't want a babysitter. Had one of those already. She was lovely but just joined in with ds' stimming.

Higher level TA with (insert minumum training and experience) and ongoing professional development (insert protected time and who will provide)

Adult support should adopt the educational rather than the security model, so that assisting xxx with developing skills takes precedence over supervising xxx in case of an incident. This is from DS2's EP report. You don't want it to say 'care and supervision', and you want it to state 'qualified' and decide what level qualification you want.

I'm only level 2 qualified which is NVQ level 2 (GCSE) level, you can get level 3 (A level standard) but TBH that is only my TA qualifications, I have a degree and a DS with ASD, so feel fairly well qualified! Grin It depends to a certain extent on the school, they will employ the TA. If they are good, they'll make sure they get someone suitable with a level 2 min qualification but if you don't trust them request level 3 minimum. You'll get a wider range of applicants with level 2. Check that your LA uses the same levels as ours, it may have it's own levels that don't match up. Experience with ASD is useful but as all DC with ASD are so completely different it may be just as good to have someone without preconceived ideas about ASD that are very different to your DS. Make sure they go on the courses supplied, even if old fashioned they are better than nothing.

Just reading maria's post. Have to say HLTA is the highest qual a TA can get and isn't being funded at the moment. Not many HLTAs will want a temporary 1:1 position, they'll want a permanent class TA job which gives them much more scope and responsibility (and will be able to get one.) Statement TA posts only last while the child is at the school. Sorry.

That;s alright. DS' 1:1 has no qualifications but 10 years experience and a child with ASD of her own. It's been a bit of a trial trying to convince her that ds isn't the same as her ds, but overall she is pretty good at what she does.

She suggested years of experience is more important (Well she would), so I suppose I'll have to go for a combination?

I did find the NVQ 2 a bit noddy, TBH, and it was aimed at a general class TA not a 1:1. I did the SEN option but know more as a parent of a child with SEN about the system than I learnt from the NVQ. But it's better to have some qualification specified or equivalent experience specified if they end up employing someone new.

Okay, so is 3 years experience working with children with communication difficulties plus experience of delivering SLT programmes okay do you think?

Yes, sounds good to me. Able to work independently? It's not a job advert, though. Hmmm. Have you looked at bigbobbles thread? Things to avoid...

StarlightMcKenzie · 16/05/2011 22:08
