Dyspraxia or DCD? what help do you get if any?

Just wondered really how dyspraxia is 'catered for' around the rest of the country. Our nhs OT's will not see dyspraxic children, nor will they see children suspected of dyspraxia, even for assessment/diagnosis as they are so poorly staffed. This means I am stuck in a catch 22 with my son as I am sure he has dyspraxia (my brother has it) and I can't get a diagnosisl nor any support as they won't see him. I could see a private OT but can/will they diagnose and will school/lea take their recommendations as seriously as an nhs therapist.

Thanks

I have seen both private and NHS OT and I must say that to date, the school have not taken any of the recommendations seriously :(

Apparently I would have had 4 sessions of SIT (if the NHS had decided that he qualified). They discharged him after the first assessment. Private OT is recommending 10-15 sessions of SIT. We had the first one today - I can see that it will be brilliant and will make a huge difference for him.

Sorry, forgot to say that the NHS didn't want to give him a "label" so gave no dx. Private OT says definite DCD and SPD (probable ASD too).

Hi,

Look at the site www.dyspraxiafoundation.org.uk and Amanda Kirby who is a professor in this area in wales.

The above is excellent and should give you some good information in getting help especially in education.

Hope this helps.

my eldest DD had 10 sessions by a private OT (funded through NHS) and my younger DD has had about 40 sessions and needs more. her paed doesnt like the private one so she has been referred to the hospital OT who we see next week.
eldest gets to do exercises at school each morning for half an hour and also help with her social skills by the same person. youngest has a program to implement in school but whether it happens or not I dont know

We were referred by paed, OT did assessment and provided us with a sensory diet to do at home. DS has had Physio assessment and has weekly physio in school with physio assistant. No dx
