Is there a standard minimum amount of 1:1 for ASD?

I am sure I have read on here that it is 15 hours per week. Am I imagining reading this?! It is possible with the way my brain is at the moment!

No - I think 15 hours is the minimum you can get on a statement.

I think if you need less than 15 hours you don't qualify for a statement.

There is def no minimum or standard for asd - it's needs based remember :)

im not sure my son was awarded 25 hrs though but in the end he has gone into a SS

Ben10isthespawnofthedevil · 16/05/2011 17:09

Ah, thanks Indigo. I knew that there was something about 15 hours and that makes sense if it is in relation to a statement.

Smile - I will be struggling to get 1 hr a week I think :)

Found this:

All primary schools except for very small schools -those with less than 100 pupils, now have much more control over their money ?as a result of the LA delegating budgets to schools. This means that where a statement specifies up to 15 hours support, the school must provide this themselves paid for out of their budget given to them by the LA.. Anything above 15 hours however, should be provided for ? topped up - by the LA

Does that mean school will be cross with me if I apply for a statement and need less than 15 hours per week 1:1?

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 16/05/2011 17:18

My LA has delegated funding to primary schools and expects them to fund up to 10 hours, so new statements must be for more than 10 hours, not 15. It must vary from LA to LA.

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 16/05/2011 17:19

Secondaries have to fund the first 20 hours, so again, new statements in secondary have to be for over 20 hours, and are as rare as hen's teeth!

Ben10isthespawnofthedevil · 16/05/2011 17:22

I found that quote on a DS site so it may be out of date and it may be 10 hours across the board - who knows?! I'm waiting to hear the results of the In School Review with the EP (who hasn't even heard of DS yet due to crap SENCO) today and am expecting them to offer nothing!

OP posts:
EllenJaneisnotmyname · 16/05/2011 17:25

Were you not invited to the 'in school review' Ben10?

Ben10isthespawnofthedevil · 16/05/2011 17:47

The In School Review in our LEA is where all of the children with SEN are discussed with behaviour support, EP, head teacher, deputy, SENCO, EAL etc. Therefore it is not a meeting for parents to attend unfortunately,

Oh, I see. Fair enough. So will the school have asked the EP so observe your DS or will they be making some decisions from reports? Is this the meeting where you hope they'll decide to request SA?

Ben10isthespawnofthedevil · 16/05/2011 18:36

EllenJane

I'm waiting for the SENCO to let me know.

I hope that they will make decisions from the Vision therapy and OT reports, in addition to getting the EP to observe him. I just want them to give him some time TBH. The work that he produces when he has 1:1 in a quiet environment is like that of a different child - unrecognisable. He also needs daily OT at school and differentiation in PE as well as physical adjustments in the classroom.

This is all while we wait for the ASD DX - the Paed was going to call the school prior to the ISR to speak to them about his needs.

Very best of luck then, Ben10. Really hope it goes your way. But if it doesn't remember you can request SA yourself. Hope your 'lovely' SENCo passes the info on promptly.

Ben10isthespawnofthedevil · 16/05/2011 18:55

Don't you worry E-J, that SA letter will be in the post to the LEA very very swiftly if they don't help him Grin

DS is in year 1. Attends full time and has 20 minutes 1:2 fizzy (gross and fine motor skills) once a week. Nothing on social skills, nothing to help with academic. He has been left IMO as he is not causing trouble to anyone except his own learning and social capabilities.

can any of you insist they get a Team Teacch TA in from your nearest ASD SS i moaned when my son was still in MS till they did only once a week mind but her help was invaluable to the TA and senco its so wrong that they seem to only be bothered enough to do anything really possitive if it benefits the school or the class rather than our DCs , my DS only really got the help we'd been screaming for when it was causing them trouble, its ridiculous ( or ridonculous as my DS say's ) lol

Ben10isthespawnofthedevil · 16/05/2011 20:01

Thanks Smile

I'll leep that in mind - waiting with bated breath to see what they have decided to provide/or not as the case may well be!

The 15 hours probably came from the ASD Guidelines
Our LA make schools fund the first 20 hours

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 16/05/2011 22:43

Definitely varies from LA to LA, then.

Ours are expected to fund the first 15 hours. So statements only ever say 15 hours.

Add to that the school saying that if the statement says 15 hours then they will refuse to give it and we should take it up with the LA and tell them to give the school more money blah blah blah.

Lovely LA I live in, and lovely school - not!

Ben10isthespawnofthedevil · 17/05/2011 06:51

Thanks Agnesdipesto

Those Guidelines are going in my file.

There is such a huge discrepancy between LEAs it is ridiculous. No wonder some schools are so dreadful at offering 1:1. :(

OP posts:
StarlightMcKenzie · 17/05/2011 09:31

My LA told me that they are only 'guidelines' and that they have a better way of meeting the needs of children with ASD, which can be done in one hour of provision a week Hmm

Sorry, - I'm the voice of doom at the moment as stuck in the middle of a proposed ammended statement parents comments and they're all bastards etc etc. but just bear that in mind.
