I was in Morrisons today purchasing a few items with my 10yr old son in tow. He's doing a shortened school day at the moment because he's so stressed and truly unable to cope with it. He has (high functioning) ASD/OCD and Tourettes-style verbal tics which he cannot control at the moment.

The till next to the one I waited at was not in use but the conveyor belt was still moving very slowly. Being fond of conveyor belts and their connection with Toy Story 3, he spent some 20+ minutes moving a small wooden brick (always have these in my handbag) along it's length.

I sat opposite, about 3 feet away and just watched him. The staff were fine with it (I asked) and not one of them gawped or made any comment; he was perfectly safe and in his own little world. BUT, the paying public didn't like it one bit! Lots of tut tut tutting and eye-rolling and a comment about "ought to be in school". \my son wasn't in the way. He wasn't doing any harm to himself or anyone else but, he WAS talking to himself, which he does repetatively, so I guess they wanted me to move him.

I was about to have a go at one lady who kept looking at him, shaking her head and looking at me.....but I really couldn't be bothered.

It was the calmest and most "at peace" I'd seen ds in a week.

So, don't judge those you know nothing about or those who behave a little oddly or even a lot oddly!! You have NO IDEA what we're going through!

That sounds like a lovely activity for your DS. I'm glad that the other customers' attitudes didn't affect his enjoyment and also that the staff were so sensible. Why can't people live and let live?

i know how you feel. and sometimes it's soo kind when someone else can make your child happy just by letting him explore and play in a way they have always wanted to and may not be conventional.

my son doesn't talk to people, but if someone roars, he'll roar back. so instead of hellos in the morning, many of our neighbors roar their greetings to him and he happily roars back.

Great neighbours you have.... how lovely!

I am so glad the staff at Morrisons were so good, it makes up for the members of the public who weren't, well a little bit. I am so glad he found a moment to be at peace and just be.

Have to say Morrisons in Swindon has been brill with my ds, let me take photos to make social story book, always acknowledge him, and aren't phased by no answer. (only one sour assistant, a young bloke, but we don't go to his till Grin) but otherwise lovely!

rebl · 11/05/2011 19:14

How lovely. It makes your day when people understand. I wouldn't bother even thinking about the paying public.

borderslass · 11/05/2011 19:16

Its always nice to hear of people being nice to our kids I find the staff in general really good its the general public that's the problem. When DS was smaller some of the staff in boots used to let him help them restock the fridge whilst I was waiting for his prescription.

This has brought tears to my eyes. The simple things that make our DC's lives happy for them... So easy, so simple, so kind of the people at Morrisons to do that so why do you get the majority of people out there tut tutting away?

LaLaLandLady · 12/05/2011 11:47

Yay!!! To Morrisons.

Could be MY son being talked of here. Our life's tough at the moment and it makes such a huge difference to our day. Just a bit of kindness.

Well done Nantwich Morrisons!

The Tut Tutter brigade are sooo quick to judge - especially where children are concerned. How can they possibly react in this unkind manner to a circumstance they know nothing about ? Luckily they are in the minority and don't work in Morrisons Nantwich !! Well done Mums and Well done Morrisons !!

moondog · 12/05/2011 14:12

That's lovely.
Thank Gos some Elf & Safety oik didn't appear, clipboard in hand.
Drop them an email and one to your local paper.
If peopel read it, next time they see a child like this, they will think twice.
