Independent school for secondary statemented AS child

Before Easter had a year 5 annual review. LEA asked for my school choice and I stated a local mainstream independent school. LEA obviously said that they would be looking to name a maintained school for my child. What happens next? Will they produce a statement with their choice of school for me to appeal and if so when would this happen?

I had to post because I have name envy!

Yes, that is exactly what will happen. However, I might be wrong but I thought that Secondary school started at Yr 7, so you will have another statement review before he has to start won't you?

Thanks for feedback, this is all new and quite daunting for me!

I believe there will be a year 6 review but as they need to revise the statement by Feb 2012 and the LEA came to the year 5 one and asked for the school name will they actually attend the year 6 one? The conversation all went around a next proper review in Year 7 once the transition has happened. Would the year 6 review be done in the first term of year 6? I just worry that if I don't get anything from them early in Year 6 then I won;t have time to sort out my school choice and appeal!?

Don't know about what they will do about the independent school, sorry. But I think most LAs insist on the secondary school choice is made during the Y5 transition annual review, in ours before Easter. The Y6 review seems like a bit of a formality as we have already had a transition conference with primary and secondary and LA advisory teachers. Our advisory teachers have attended every annual review so far. Others on here have experience of requesting independent schools so hopefully better advice to follow!

Okay, well actually you are in a good position timewise to make your case. THEY will have to name their choice, you will get to visit it often and regularly and ask enough questions to be able to demonstrate how their choice can't possibly meet your child's needs whilst the one you would like does (as can an independent EP).

SOSSEN have a questionnaire that you can take with you.

Thanks for all this advice. I will look into this further and follow up the SOSSEN questionnaire.
