My daughter has just been diagnosed with Dyspraxia but also highly gifted in some areas. She is 7 and the school seem to want to help but are not quite sure how.

Does anyone have any advice about what we should expect from special needs support or any other useful tips for helping her.

Ask OT to include recommendations in the report for the school SENCO to refer to. Practical help like a writing slope, adjustable seat/move n sit cushions, pencil grips, ruler with handle, more time/help to undress for pe etc, depending on how it presents. Teaching-wise expecting less written work/allowing more time and breaks, breaking tasks down and giving regular prompts as to the next step, using handouts on her desk rather than expecting her to copy from the board, allowing her to fidget(within reason) perhaps with a soft ball to squeeze. Have you had a meeting with SENCO and teacher yet ?

Thanks Liz that is really helpful. We are still waiting for the Ed Psych report and will go and see the teacher and head then. Fortunately the class teacher is the SENCO which is why this was picked up in the first lace I think.

the sen code of practice is always worth a good read, lets you know what to expect from the school. As you have outside involvement your dd should be on school action plus and should have a SMART IEP, would second lizs getting OT involved at school and with target setting Smile
