Hi all, got letter today saying on list to see SALT for DD2 (21 months) and to write some notes for app on what words she can say and what her regular words are! Would you class a regular word as a word she says everyday?? DD will only say 3 words 'yes', 'mum' 'no' everyday guaranteed. However, there are other words such as 'yo-yo' that she will say if we say them first so she sort of mimics what we say, however she wont come out with 'yoyo' if she sees a yo-yo she will only say it if we get her attention and say it to her first then she will copy. So my question is, the 3 words she says regularly are obviously her regular words, the other 7 words she says she mimics from us and doesnt say the spontaneously at all, so would the mimicked words be classed as words she knows?? Also do animal sounds count as words if done in the right context i.e. a snort for peppa pig dvd etc??

Is mimicking words a lot but not saying them spontaneously common in toddlers?

Im getting all these therapy appointments through post for kids i wonder when its my turn for therapy :)

I would just list them under headings for your own notes really and explain the context of those that she repeats for you but will not use herself spontaneously. If she does use any words but says them a bit wrong try and write them down in the way she would say them (eg if she trys to say pig but it comes out wrong as "ig" then count it as a word but note how it is said)

Animal sounds - only if you use the words like moo and baa etc. The snort type of noise not really.

I wouldn't count the mimicked words, but would mention she mimics some more words. Think the mimicking (echoing) is a normal stage for toddler language development.
