If your child has a PDA dx, which professional diagnosed it?

I'm pretty convinced that ds (5) has PDA, but as he is relatively compliant at school and he is pretty bright too so not behind his peers academically (even though I'm pretty sure he is operating well below his potential- but of course, maybe that's just maternal blindness). School have said they cannot justify calling in an ed psych atm. (They are due to reconsider this at the beginning of term.) The school nurse has referred us to the Community Paediatrician.
I'm wondering what is the best/quickest route to pursue to get him the help he needs, if he does indeed have PDA.
Any experiences of the route to diagnosis would be very much appreciated, I'd love to hear where you got the most help and if there were any recommendations for getting the best out of the system.

Ed Psyche assessed my son (6.5years) and reported that he had PDA, she originally thought aspergers, he was also compliant at school BUT had severe concentration problems and his attitude/motivation to learning was terrible. Hes been out of school since January. Paediatrician this month will either confirm or rediagnose what EP says. He has so many autistic behaviours BUT is sociable, on his terms and as long as he has control of the play he is ok, if another child attempts to control the play all hell breaks loose! I think you need to push for EP to assess him, its your right as a worried parent. I wish I had known about the EP's involvement then I wouldnt have spent over 2 years been batted by around by our useless CAMHS

My other concern at the moment Sops is that PDA suddenly seems to be diagnosed quite a lot, there are so many labels now and it appears this is a new one, its so important to get the label right as PDA kids are taught differently from kids on the autistic spectrum. Im keeping an open mind as to the EP's thoughts until the paediatrician assessment

Sops An EP cannot diagnose your child. You are going the right route with the community paed as they are qualified to dx developmental disorders in children as are child psychs. An EP can only advise on what the child needs within the school environment to help them cope/learn. If school are not co-operating with an EP assessment, I would wait for paed appointment and go from there. School will have no concerns if he is achieving academically and able to socialise and causing them not behahaviour problems. I would imagine symptoms will need to be present in more than one setting to get a good dx ??

sorry i didnt imply that the ed psyche gives a firms diagnosis, hence me saying im keeping an open mind as to her thoughts till we see the paed this month for assessment. I spose what i meant was that since the EP has reported she suspects PDA the ball has suddenly started moving, she got the tribunal for the SA stopped and we are in the assessment process now so until she came on board nothing was happening.

cornsilk, yes of course you can message me Smile

p.s i find all this assessment lark a bit confusing myself, as my son has an apt with a community paed this month and also ive had a letter from the hospital saying that they are arranging an apt for a multi disciplinary meeting or something. Had one of those on Tier 3 of CAMHS 2 years ago which came to nothing

Thanks everyone.
I don't really think he needs to see an ed psych right now as school think he is doing fine academically. Although, as I already said I'm pretty sure it's well below his potential. He does have some behaviour issues there but they said "we don't have enough evidence that they are severe enough to justify ed psych" when we met a few weeks ago, but we are due to meet again once term starts and review that decision.
We are waiting for an appt with a community paed. What actually is the difference between a developmental paed and a community one?
