Ds (10 months) is under investigation for developmental delays. Physio said his head strength is not too bad, but he has intermittent muscle tone so sometimes has a tendency to slump.

He is nearly 10 kg, and his car seat only goes up to 9 kg, his head reaches the top. Our dds went into forward facing when this happened, but they were older and stronger. Bigger rear facing ones are so expensive, I wonder if anyone can recommend a good one so we don't waste our money.

hazeyjane - do you have isofix in your car? I know this is not the doen thing at all, but I have a RF Britax toddler seat going spare, complete with isofix base.

I promise it has not been in any accident at all - we stopped using it when dd1 got too tall for it, and then by the time dd2 had come along, there was another seat we preferred.

It is the Britax seat that Volvo used to supply (don't know if they do any more). If you would like it, and it is possible to get it to you, you are more than welcome to it. But I fully understand if you do not want to have a second hand seat off a random stranger...

we have an izi combi x3 by besafe (with isofix) - it is up to 18kg/4 years. it has good test results but is expensive. but ideally, you should be able to use if for another 3 years. we shopped around online and bought it when it was on offer and got quite a bit of money back via quitco so it wasn't that expensive...

We have the besafe izicombi x3 as well but in the non isofix version and we love it. DD#3 (NT as far as we know) is 18mths but a very big 18mth and still has tonnes of space in it. Hope to get her to at least 3, ideally 4yrs old rear facing in it.

Take a look at www.rearfacing.co.uk for lots of info and a list of suppliers of the different seats too. It is well worth getting it somewhere for fitting and see as some are quite bulky and will suit some cars better than others.

Second the besafe izicombi, very supporting and various paddings can be removed as the child gets older.

hazey, if money is an issue then I'd highly recommend the Britax 2 Way elite.
it is the only seat on sale in the UK that is harnessed up to 25kg (afaik), and it can be used either rear or forward facing, making it good value for money
it's one of the cheapest ERF seats on the market
you can buy an extra head support for it if necessary as well

Thankyou so much for all the recommendations. I will look into them all. The Britax 2way elite looks great, but I can't seem to see anywhere that sells it - admittedly I was looking at 3 in the morning, so may have been half asleep!

Silverfrog, thankyou for your amazing offer, I'll pm you.

Thankyou

Saw the Britax 2way elite in Mothercare yesterday, with 10% off.

I will have to lose a few inches off my hips in order to be able to squeeze in between ds and dd2 in the back seat!

hazeyjane, it must have been a differen one you saw,. Mothercare don't stock any extended rear-facing seats

might have been the first class you saw? that can be used forward and rear-facing but only rearfaces up to 13kg i think

hazeyjane · 03/05/2011 13:48

Oh dear, sorry, you are completely right, thisisyesterday! The assistant swore blind that it went up to 4 years old, but looking in the catalogue, i can see she was wrong.

Unfortunately I our car was stranded in a garage last night after dh accidentally filled it up with deisel (sleep deprivation!), so i haven't been able to check for isofis fixings!
