Is constant noise a SN thing?

I only have one DS who is 5 so can't compare.....

He makes noise which is either singing or really really loud talking all of the time that he isn't watching a film. He doesn't know that he is talking too loud ever. I find it really draining as there isn't either an off switch or a volume switch!

Is this what NT 5.10 year olds do? He has dyspraxia and SPD but also looking at an ASD potentially due to other traits.

My ds1 is suspected AS and, while he is capable of being quiet for quite a while if he's really concentrating on something, his default is lots of humming, recitation of alphabet/ phonics, singing a selection of songs (current faves include Once I Caught a Fish Alive, Dave Brubeck and Over and Over by Hot Chip - oh the irony). I had assumed that it was just a particularly annoying habit and would sometimes tell him off, but now assume that it may be an ASD behaviour, and while I would dearly love to help him cut back on it, don't know whether this is possible /appropriate.

PS he is 5 also (and I totally agree with you re Ben 10 Grin)

DS1 dx dyspraxia has volume control issues (has no control - especially when whispering [bugrin] . He did tell me once, when i frustratedly asked him why he has to make constant noise - that he doesn't like silence. He feels he has to fill the void.

woofie - had to laugh at Over and Over Grin

auntevil - fill the void?? I can only assume DS2 is going for the entire void of space ....

Ben10 - but it's just a few lines of each song... over and over again... the same lines.... well, other than yellow submarine as for some unknown reason he likes the entire song and knows it all.

My adult DD mentioned "gee wouldn't it be amusing to teach him that song called The Song That Never Ends..." I told her if she did that, she would be babysitting until he learns a new song. Grin Wretched girl!

This is the Song that never ends...
it just goes on and on my friend...
some people started singing it not knowing what it was..
and they'll continue singing it forever just because
it is the song that never ends..
it just goes on and on my friend...
(and so on and so on...)

Particularly annoying and evil little song, that is...

My boys sing this delightful ditty;

This is a song that'll get on your nerves,
Get on your nerves, get on your nerves,
This is a song that'll get on your nerves,
All day long.

Repeat, ad nauseum, ad infinitum...

To some nursery rhyme tune that I can't remember the correct words to anymore. Aaargghhh.

oh god - I've heard that one too! LOL

My DS (suspected and waiting for dx of aspergers) talks and talks oh and talks about one single subject non stop. Unless he is asleep or watching TV by himself. If we are watching a programme together he will talk through the whole programme discussing what it happening and predicting what is going to happen next (great fun). I have actually found myself singing in my own head lol to enable me to keep patience and block him out! Grin

My child is NT other than an auditory processing disorder. She sings a lot - when she was younger she would sing for the majority of many days. I loved it - to me it meant she was happy. Her dad hated it and still does Sad
