DD1 is 4 has ataxic CP and is due to start school in August. Trying best to toilet train her as she is due to go mainstream and dont really want her starting school in nappies. She is finally starting to show some willingness, sometimes, and today told me she going to poo (Hooray) she has no wet awareness and is so shocked if she ever wets in the potty.

Question is around training pants as trying to increase her independance and with a new baby at home I am not always free when and if she decides to sit on potty. Has anybody used any and would recommend any? I have googled till I am more confused than ever. Health visitor looked at me blankly when I asked her for advice and said they not allowed to recommend anything.

Also, anybody got any tips to increase awareness, she doesnt even know if she is wet. Asked her pead and he said she can start school in nappies - thanks for the help there Dr!

Thanks, Karen

This may be useless - but if you used really cheap nappies so she does feel when she is wet then she might not like the sensation and be more inclined to try the potty. Good nappies I think draw all the liquid away so babies/children don't have that uncomfortable feeling of being wet.

You could also put kitchen roll inside the nappy as that will feel wet too.

I found Tots Bots trainer pants quite good - they are made of towelling type material. They usually hold a wee giving you time to get to the loo before it all gushes over the floor - unless it is an extremely heavy wee! Good luck we are still trying.

Forgot to add - I find them good as DD definately knows she is wet when we use them - unlike disposable pull ups. They used to sell them on the Nappy Lady website and from what I remember the postage was not too expensive so maybe you could just order a couple of pairs to start with to see how you get on with them.

Thanks for the tips. DD has no idea she is wet, I put her back in real nappies last week and she argued with me about her nappy being wet. Even let her feel it with her hand but she accused me of wetting it in the sink.

Think will keep her in pull ups for now and try real nappies / pants and all ideas above in the summer.

Cheers x
