Hi Guys, are we still up for the friday night chat...?

This week has been a really good one at chez sign. Ds went on the ASD playscheme for the 1st time and coped really well, also had musci session yesterday and was a little star!

I a have been cooking for britain as my living room is full of Celts... dh's friends are down from scotland and across from wales for the weekend, in order to.... play with dh's toys, (they are all transformers fans.)

little boys in big bodies,

how has everyone else been?

hi sign Smile

been to the sn group run on monday and tuesday this week, was nice to catch up with people I haven't seen for a while and the odd one or two I see more often! Would like to say it's been noce not having to do the school run but ds1 had extra sats revision everyday Hmm oh well, next week maybe.

is this the original transformers?

EllenJane1 · 15/04/2011 20:11

Hi sign and ninja!

Glad the hols aren't too stressful for you both, nice to catch up with friends. I don't like the sound of extra SATs revision in the hols, ninja. My DS2 only has 3 days of school before SATs, due to insets, bank hols and polling, but we've been playing it down here.

We're having a long w/e in Devon, so this is brought to you by 3G!

TheNinjaGooseIsOnAMission · 15/04/2011 20:17

that sounds lovely ellen Smile ds1 was quite happy as they got breakfast and doughnuts, that was all the detail I got, nothing about revision, oh and football, he played football at break time Hmm

Evening

This week I am definitely too tired for .... anything.

I'm just popping in, because I won't be long for my bed. Had another funny turn this afternoon, then fell asleep whilst putting dd down for her nap and woke up almost three hours later! Shock I never sleep in the day - its pretty much unheard of for me, even when I'm really ill. I was in a right panic when I woke up because the boys were downstairs on their own. Fortunately, they had just assumed dd was being difficult to get to sleep, so had been watching tv and not noticed the time. The upside is that dd had a lovely long nap too and woke up in a much better mood than she's been in all week.

I have bribed persuaded the boys to do some times tables practise with me every day this week by giving them stickers for each times table written out that basically mean they will each get a pound at the weekend and for ds1 the motivation has been that, if he does his times tables practise, he can go on the Woodlands Junior website on my laptop to reinforce the practise. They were actually begging me to come and do their times tables practise this afternoon - twas very odd. Grin

I have another blooming pokemon cake to make for ds2's birthday on Monday. But its Ditto this time and as she's basically a shape changing blob, its a very forgiving design. Wink

Lovely to hear you've had a nice week Sign and well done to ds for handling the playscheme so well. Rather you than me with the housefull and all that cooking though.

Ninja, ds2 and I are doing some SATs stuff at home over the holidays. He's not pleased about the idea, but actually quite enjoys it when we get going. Hope you have a more relaxing week next week.

EllenJane1 · 15/04/2011 20:20

Well, doughnuts would make all the difference! Grin

moosemama · 15/04/2011 20:21

Envy at your long weekend. Grin

EllenJane1 · 15/04/2011 20:22

Did I just cross posts with you, moose?

TheNinjaGooseIsOnAMission · 15/04/2011 20:24

moose, did you go back to the doctor in the end? Hope you start to feel better soon Smile The cake will be fine I'm sure, your other ones have been fab!

EllenJane1 · 15/04/2011 20:25

We're doing times tables practice here too. I use a pack of cards, ace to 10, shuffle them, to do them out of order. I'll have to look at the woodlands website, sounds right up my boys' street.

Sort of, its taking me so long to type anything at the moment - then I have to preview, as the letters in my words are all coming out backwards and I'm typing completely the wrong words in some instances as well - that we could probably post half and hour apart and for me it would still technically be a cross post. Blush

I'm really struggling to keep up with any thread that moves faster than one post every five minutes or so at the moment - its so frustrating.

moosemama · 15/04/2011 20:31

Ninja, no I haven't been to the docs yet. I know, I know, its partly because I can't get there with all three dcs in tow during the holidays and partly because I'm really scared of being fobbed off AND/OR of what the reality of the problem might be.

Ellen, the Woodlands website has some great times tables games here ds1 loves it. He also loves Timez Attack which you can download for free and then if you want to pay to get more interesting worlds and levels for them to try.

TheNinjaGooseIsOnAMission · 15/04/2011 20:32

that sounds crap justa, sure start don't do anything like that here, glad you got it sorted

TheNinjaGooseIsOnAMission · 15/04/2011 20:41

our surestart centres just run groups, they seem to have opened loads of centres here in the last few years.

moosemama · 15/04/2011 20:43

Ninja, yes I suppose I will have to go - can't carry on like this. Problem is dh is less than no help at medical appointments, just sits there looking blank and says "I don't know" whenever I ask him anything and Mum gets all bolshy and puts the doctor's back up. Hobson's choice really.

Hi carrot.

EllenJane1 · 15/04/2011 20:43

Sorry, justa. Sure start is usually a 'Good Thing' but it must depend on the people in charge, just like a school's ethos depends so much on the HT.

Have you finished that thesis?...

moosemama · 15/04/2011 20:46

Our surestart centre is tiny and basically just runs group, like Ninja's. There is apparently a support group for parents of children with SNs but its only for parents of children up to 8 and ds1 was 9 last weekend.

There's a much bigger one just up the road (although a couple of bus rides for me as there's no direct route) that's about three times the size of ours and they have all the OT assessments etc there, so I assume they do a lot more. Despite only living 5 minutes away from it, we don't get any information at all to know what services they offer though.

Thecarrotcake · 15/04/2011 20:50

Hey moose :) hey ninja :)

EllenJane1 · 15/04/2011 20:57

Surestart centres were originally placed in areas of deprivation to help those parents whose parenting skills could do with some help and to provide services for those parents who often didn't manage to access HV or SALT or playgroups etc. A one stop shop. Perhaps due to the fact that you need to be PITA parents or a bit middle class normally.

They were rolled out to many other areas as they were so successful and popular. Unfortunately the coalition is cutting their funding drastically, seeing them as a nice extra, not essential. Sad

EllenJane1 · 15/04/2011 20:58

Hi Carrotcake! Where have you been hiding?

moosemama · 15/04/2011 21:06

Ours is very new, having recently been built in the school grounds. I heard lots of playground chat about how we didn't want or need one 'because they are for deprived areas only'. As a result its been very underused, most of the Mums round here seem to think that if you have to pay a fiver or more for an activity its somehow better than anything you could get for a pound or free at the Surestart centre. They are a bunch of middle class snobs.

I take dd to stay and play and messy play - she loves it. Can't wait for the nice weather, because they have a fantastic outdoor play area complete with tricycles etc. We used to go more, but now stay and play is on the same day as toddler group and I don't think either she or I could cope with both in one day.

Whenever I go there now its full of a particular clique of mums who come all the way over from the other side of town, because the playworker also works at their childrens' nursery (she is lovely, she's a mum of one of the boys in ds2's class) and because its brand new, with new toys and equipment and always empty. They're friendly enough though and at least it means the centre is being used.

Am not sure what they'd do with the building if the government cut its funding, it was only finished last September, is tiny and was purpose built.

I am off to bed ladies. Hope you all have good weekends. Smile
