A sensory issue?

HI,

I've posted before about my DS, 6, who has definite ASD traits. We hve begun the process of seeking a diagnosis but I'm doing a lot of reading and have decided that he has a lot of sensory issues.

One of these is noise. He hates noise and it is one of the prime causes of melt downs that we have.

Now, he has very good hearing but I have noticed that when he watches TV he uses the subtitles..... he says he can't hear the dialogue yet he can hear the opening of a kit kat across several counties! In the car he wants the stereo up loudly... we have it turned to the back seat speakers only and I canhear it well enough but he says he can't hear the quiet bits.

I was wondering if this means he is struggling to filter out the different levls of noise to het to the sounds he needs/wants to hear?

Does that make any sense?

Could be , or auditory processing

My dd is the same the tv or radio in car have to be turned up loud for her. I used to think she couldn't hear it cos she was always talking too much but not so sure now you mention it as well! I always tell her "stop whining and you will hear it!" mean mother that I am! She hasn't discovered subtitles yet so sssshhhhhh! :)

Hi,

My son had problems with noise. Very hypersensitive to it except when he was hitting his drums. I'm not sure where you are, but we managed to get him on a free Listening Programme in Glasgow which helped a lot. They find out which bones are not in balance and provide music at different frequency levels to help train them, so that things are balanced. He's still got much better hearing than most, but rarely covers his ears now. The noise doesn't seem to hurt as much and the meltdowns aren't usually to do with noise. I can give you the details if you're anywhere close by.

Creatovator, that sounds really interesting. How did you find that? We live in Fife but could easily travel to Glasgow. xx

shaz298, sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I'm new to Twitter and couldn't find things again! Blush I found out about the Listening Programme through a friend who's daughter was helped. The email address is [email protected]. Hope that's helpful. :)

This def sounds like auditory issues which can be cured by auditory integration training

Sounds like he has hypersensitive hearing and auditory discrimination problems, which is what AIT cures.

Just realised Twitter's different Blush. This Social Networking takes some getting used to!
