Hi i only ever posted a few times but have been coming on these boards for almost a year i just wanted to share some good news and maybe give hope to others that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
My DS who is now 3 has had speech and language delay there were concerns about autism as well, we were lucky enough to have him in speech therapy for the past year and he now attends a child development center one morning a week, i am happy to say he is now well on his way to talking in sentences, i thought this would never come i went through a stage of absolute despair as there was no progress for such a long time,i am so proud of what he has achieved although still a good bit behind his peers he will be ready in time for school,he doesn't get as obsessive with things now i am unsure if it was just a phase but it seems all his little quirks and are just part of his personality which makes us love him even more.
I am so grateful that he is happy and healthy and just wanted to say that i think mumsnet is amazing and it certainly helped me a lot this last year

Hi mumu80 that's lovely news, you must be really relieved. You have given me hope as we are currently going through the whole worry with ds. He is going to be 3 next month and currently only says about 20 single words (no sentences) but only says these words when he feels like it. He seems to understand quite a lot and can follow simple instructions but never answers yes or no when asked a question. He has had a few sessions now the language and speech therapist and she has now referred him to a paediatrician. So all a bit worrying. He does play with other children but also likes to do his own thing. Just wondering, before your son started talking how did he communicate non verbally? And how was his behaviour in general?

Yay little 80! Cracking news!

fao sleepyhorse
i understand how you feel its is frustrating and sometimes quite lonely when they are non verbal at this age.my ds was the same until just a few months ago, only a handful of single words, he would take my hand to show him what he wanted but it was extremely frustrating for us all.
things that helped us to build his vocabulary were -
keeping it simple - using only key words
getting down to his level more
lots of eye contact
flash cards
also a bit of sing language, it seems to help kids associate signs with words.
i think time helps as well as they get older they will just naturally want to talk
he now says no but still hasn't said yes yet, (they sound very similar)now his vocabulary is around 50 words he has started to join 2 words together but still very basic eg -(blue car) not sure why it takes some longer than others but it is even more rewarding when they finally do it.
hang in there hopefully its just a small delay and do not beat yourself up i guaranteed you are doing all you can.
best wishes to you and your son he sounds lovely

Obviously meant news

Really pleased to hear your news - like you I've been reading a lot of mumsnet but not posting. My nearly-2year-old has no speech at all, and I have other concerns about her - reading others experience on here has been really helpful - but also a bit scary! Glad to know there can be a good outcome after all the stress.
