How long did it take you to get a Maclaren Major?

Our Paed sent off a referal 2 weeks ago, but said it could take 6 months - has anyone really waited that long? I was hoping we would be able to take it on holiday with us in the middle of August.

Hi

In my area they no longer provide a Mac Major - we were told he could have a wheelchair but not a buggy! DS is 3.7 with ASD now too big for his buggy but often refuses to walk.

I am very lucky that a wonderful mumsnetter has given me hers.

We didn't even try to ask. DS2 started to use his feet as brakes in his old buggy and I was getting back problems from pushing it, so we scoured ebay and hit lucky with one in pristine condition with a lot of the accessories, available locally. (It only took a month for it to be no longer pristine!)

we waited about that time I think. The referral had to go to wheelchair services, then wait for them to come out to measure dd3 up (even though we only wanted a mac major) then wait again as they didn't have any in stock at the time and then wait for a delivery, they don't offer the option to collect. So yes, about a 6 month wait in all from first asking the physio if we could have one. You never know though, that's just where I am and I didn't chase during that time either, if you wanted it soon try contacting wheelchair services yourself to see if that's the expected wait.

It took us less time 2-3 months I think- but I was on the phone to them regularly. in the end in appeared very quickly after I called them how our buggy had collapsed going up a curb and DS had fallen out into the road, had to rescue him whilst the buggy rolled into the path of oncoming traffic - fortunately some else caught it in time. But was a very scary situation

it appeared days after that. Grin it was funny how they suddenly miraculously found they had one in stock at that point.... Hmm

Our physio put in the request and within 2 weeks it was delivered. He has a w/chair now but similar wait times.
If you don't need any adaptations then its really quick here.

Same as anon, ours was really quick, even though they don't usually provide them to under 3 year olds, PJ got his at 2.4.

i bought a second hand one from e-bay, so about a week.

we wanted wcs to provide the wc, and as you can't have both without a huuuuuuge fight, it was much easier to just buy one ourselves.

Where are you anon?

Mario, I am in suffolk. We are fortunate to have very good services here. I think becuase there are more fields & pigs than people!
The only thing that can be a bit dodgy is SALT, other than that there are short wait times & good services for everything & ds2 has a fantastic community paed who really makes sure everyone else is doing their job.
Schools are also brilliant.

But Shhhhhh don't tell everyone as they'll all be moving here!
Where are you?

sodthekidsiwantthechoc · 12/04/2011 10:04

Mario. I am anon usually!

MarioandLuigi · 12/04/2011 14:26

We are in Nottingham, I only asked in case there was the slightest chance you were in Nottinghamshire so I could get my hopes up :o

My aun lives in Ipswich, maybe I should move in with her!

Hi, in our area if your child is not dependent on a wheelchair indoors (ie can bottom shuffle or crawl) they cannot qualify for a wheelchair or buggy even if they need one outdoors. This is the policy in both Northants and Warwickshire. Sucks doesn't it?

Have you all seen the whizzkids campaign? If not the link is

They still need signatures, please help if you can.

I am in Bristol. My paed filled in the form and measured DS at a routine appointment, I sent the form to wheelchair services and the Major arrived within about 4 weeks. I was very impressed.

Saracen · 15/04/2011 02:02

I waited about six months before chasing it up. (I wasn't desperate to get it quickly: I had requested it in advance of actually needing it because I'd heard the waiting times could be long.)

When I did chase it, wheelchair services said they'd never received the request, so the PT re-requested it and asked them to treat it as an urgent case, which they did. We got the buggy three weeks later.
