Acording to my sons rewritten statement which came today

How old is he?
My son has Asperger's and no other learning difficulties. I found in an educational context it impacted on areas such as understanding figurative and metaphorical language, irony and his ability to read with expression and fluency.
His learning was also affected by the style of the delivery by the teacher, someone wandering away from the learning intention, or packing their lesson with informal conversation and jokes interfered with his ability to understand the lesson content. Foreign languages have proved to be inaccessible.
I'd go back and unpick what they are saying and then attack the weaknesses in their arguments.

Thanks. He is 6. Also has Aspergers. Irony is the EP report recomends a program in social communication and interacrion and a specialist teacher. Silly LEA!

fine, remove 'social', leave 'communication', because wtf is communication if it isn't with other people?

moondog · 07/04/2011 18:31

That's not true.
In fact it is downright illegal.
Quote us the line and the section and we'll see you straight.

moondog · 07/04/2011 18:32

Yes.
I refuse to have any truck with the phrase 'social communication' for reasons Star says. I'm a SALT too.

Tiggles · 07/04/2011 18:32

Ds struggles massively with group work because it uses, oh yes, social communication with his peer group Hmm.

wasuup3000 · 07/04/2011 19:28

Well Part 5 of the statement says

H has a dx of Dyspraxia, Autistic Spectrum Disorder and partial symptoms of ADD (also has low imediate verbal memory recall 2nd percentile).

H has some difficulties with social communication.

The other parts concentrate on his dyspraxia.

The EP report says H's SEN are:
The development of:

fine and gross motor skiils

handwriting and writing skills

social interaction and communication skills

age appropriate attention and focussing skills

self help skills

Obkectives

H needs to further develop:

fine and gross motor skills

handwriting and writing skills

social interaction and communication skills

attention and focussing skills

self help skills

Part 5 should be empty or mention his favourite snack or something NON-EDUCATIONAL!

wasuup3000 · 07/04/2011 19:32

My case officer is also off for two weeks, so I told the admin at the SEN dept that I want to see written evidence and research from the LEA which shows that social communication is a non educational need ASAP or I will be taking this further.

Just re-write it and send it back as you want. When it comes back with the crap on it again, ask them to finalise it for appeal.

moondog · 07/04/2011 19:34

Refer to the landmark judgemnts link and then look at the Lancashire Judgement. It stipulates quite clearly that SALT and its aspects are educational needs

Very few people know that, least of all the people filling in statements so it's often up to you to put them right.
I do-frequently and statements get changed without a murmur.

wasuup3000 · 07/04/2011 19:35

This is the 2nd time they have rewritten it because their old reports were so out of date by the stage they issued the first statement I had to insist on newer reports being taken into consideration!

wasuup3000 · 07/04/2011 19:39

Thanks moondog I think I mentioned that when I ranted at them and also said about it being the year of SLCN which was supposed to raise awareness too!

OP posts:
moondog · 07/04/2011 19:41

'raise awareness'

That's one of my pet hates.

Howzabout actually doing something??

If you contact me with your email I can send you somew stuff that might help.

wasuup3000 · 07/04/2011 19:42

I think my SEN officer is quite well aware of how badly she has written this but wanted to keep within timelines and bugger off on her hols. I think she will expect me to spend my easter rewriting it so she can come of her hols all relaxed and have her work done for her too boot!

OP posts:
StarlightMcKenzie · 07/04/2011 19:51

that's no bad thing.

wasuup3000 · 07/04/2011 20:59

LOL If I didn't laugh......
I would cry. Thanks everyone x

Very good scientific research showing that social communication is absolutely vital to all people on the autism spectrum, and that an absence of good social communication skills prevents IQ from being used. So it's like saying you can have a family car, but we won't give you any wheels for it. Utterly wrong.

wasuup3000 · 08/04/2011 23:01

Yes his reading age is 12 years old even though he is 6 due to a guess what must have been hyperlexia (read cat, dog ect at 18 months and could spell stuff he saw such as tree and gate as we went past them at 2). He didn't join two words together until after 3 so in that sense his early reading ability has helped him. In another sense it has held him back because he appears to be brighter and understand more than he actually does so it has been a fight to get any help for him at all.

they have said simular to me too like all the issues are separate when they are all irrevocably linked and stem from social and communication problems via the asd .
