if anyone can help?? My ds, 10 yo primarily down syndrome, has a really small manhood. When he was a baby, the pead did wonder if he was weeing enough from it. Anyway fast forward with no issues, except our embarrassment with size (not his, he doesn't understand) he is complaining of it being sore. To the point where he is crying. Crying isn't something ds has really ever done. What could be wrong??

Oh the joys of parenthood Smile

Could his foreskin be too tight and preventing the wee from coming out easily? That can be remedied by circumcision can't it?

devientenigma · 06/04/2011 08:44

Thanks Al1son, he is weeing ok, always has, that was just the pead in the beginning when he was a baby. It's just all of a sudden really sore.

UTI? If it's what Al1son said, perhaps the pain comes when he gets a stiffie? (entering puberty early)

Al1son · 06/04/2011 08:48

I can't imagine that size is any issue at all then.

Perhaps he needs a trip to the GP to check for a UTI? Poor thing.

devientenigma · 06/04/2011 08:50

You know this is another thing, I have heard of friends boys projecting there wee when changing a nappy, or getting stiffies. However he's still in nappies and I have never seen either??

My nt son had this a while a go we we encouraged him to pull the foreskin back and wash well and then apply some antiseptic cream. It went eventually.Honestly the things we have to deal with as parents.:o

Trip to the GP. They can get an infection under the foreskin and it does really hurt (so I've been told!).

Chundle · 06/04/2011 10:27

My friends boy had similar problems he isn't SN but has small willy and she says he is often scratching around and appears in pain. She took him to docs an doc advised to circumcise as it will stop the pain and will also give the appearance of a bigger willy for him when he's older. I think they thought as it was small it was more difficult to retract foreskin and keep clean therefore more prone to infection hence then pain. He is much younger though only around 4 yr old.HTH

starfishmummy · 06/04/2011 10:40

Hi devient. It may get bigger when puberty starts (DS's has grown!!). In the meantime it could be that he has an infection so I'll second or third a trip to the gps.

usedtobeahappycamper · 06/04/2011 11:18

My sister's sons all had small penises when they were little. I assume puberty sorted that out as they are all fathers now.
It does sound as though it might be an infection, so GP is the only course of action.

My nt boy could not retract foreskin and similar size issue. He has to pull it back as far as he can 10 times in bath and it loosened somewhat and now retracts. Important for cleaning when older. Ds3 also small and asd has shown no interest in his at all. Wonder if he will have similar issues when older. I think if not retract easily can form scar tissue and may need small snip ( does not have to be full circumcision) Other 2 it was a major source of entertainment from age 2. Ds3 now 4 and zero interest. Is this typical asd behaviour. Don't get me wrong rather have the problem of low than high interest to deal with. Now we've started this embarrassing thread can we all join in?

Chundle · 06/04/2011 16:04

It is interesting though that boys play with their willies but girls don't play with their boobs! Sorry I've hijacked your thread now!

devientenigma · 06/04/2011 21:34

lol @ the hijacks, why not start a discussion somewhere on why boys play with themselves when girls don't.

zzzzz my mam just said that about embarrassing bodies lol.

Anyway just thought I would let you all know, apparantly kids with DS can have small genitalia, have low arousal etc, he's on anti b's just in case he does have a UTI, following a chat with the doc over the phone........so he hasn't seen how small he is lol

Hope your little man is better soon.
Zzzzz can only say what friend passed on from doc I'm afraid as personal experienced of snipped ones is not very much! So I can't really comment :)

Puberty has been the hardest part of bringing up DS (now 16.5 thank god). There is a dearth of straight-talking info on how to deal with the physical side of things. Lots on the emotional side not huge amounts on how to deal with stiffies, fiddling, the obvious effects that free-ranging boobs will have on a young man (even in the waiting room of the paediatrician's office).
I wouldn't want to go into detail about DS as at his age it seems disloyal, however, if you have a lad who has not had much opportunity (through physical disability) to fiddle or not much desire to fiddle as yet, I second having a little check to ensure his foreskin can retract easily back and forth. Also, from the onset of puberty, you should probably encourage a foreskin-back wash although not every time. It can get quite ..erk.. under there.
