Just to say, in case you've missed it, the Temple Grandin film is on Sky Atlantic at 9 tonight (3.4.11). It stars Clare Danes and has had good reviews.

Argh, we don't have Sky but Virgin. I'm sure all the Sky Atlantic stuff will appear in time on other channels. It looks very good. I have seen Temple Grandin speak twice and she is very interesting and odd but also very autistic e.g. no eye contact or interaction when signing books.

Same here. Blinking Virgin. Hopefully it'll be repeated soon.

Watched this on Sky plus this morning.

Am in awe of what Templin Grandin has managed to achieve with what on the surface appear to be quite limiting autistic symptoms. I will have to get the book now. There are some of the traits esp the way of speaking etc that I can identify with from DS (no DX) and DS's best friend who has a DX.

I haven't read the book, but her mum didn't seem in any way not nice to me

DS has AS and is much less affected by autism than I know Temple Grandin is (I have read about her, just not her stuff) but some of the stuff was definitely what I see in him, when she got to the ranch right at the beginning and couldn't link her talking about opening a gate to opening the gate in front of her, the conversation about her squeezing machine with the counselor or psychiatrist (or whoever that was) where they were talking at complete cross purposes and the meltdown she had at the party were just so my DS.

I though Claire Danes did an absolutely fantastic job, I know she spoke like Temple does and again very similar to my DS, but other things as well, I noticed the way she ran and facial expressions, especially her eyes were again exactly what I see in my DS.

Temple Grandin is absolutely inspiring, but I knew before watching it that it was going to end well, but I was really interested in how they were going to portray it all, her autism and her success and I loved it.

I'm slightly worried now that children with autism are all going to be expected to have photographic memories because that wasn't explained that well, but that's really my only gripe and not a major one, lol

I found it sad :( in areas and had to hold back a few times - didn't want my DH to see Blush I suppose it brought it home to me, what life I am/DS is to expect as he gets older.

It was also inspirational and makes me even more determined to fight, but to also make that awareness issue more prominent.

Why can't we educate children in school about ASD and other SENs - its becoming more prominent world wide, so start on the DC and let them pass on the knowledge.

If it highlights the fact that one of our DC has SEN, then we as parents, fear that our DC will be bullied more. This is the question - 'will they be bullied more by the NT DC with a more educated knowledge, than they are already for being 'different''? :)

I've just watched which was excellent. I keep remembering the phrase "different but not less" which I think is so important.

CinnamonPretzel · 08/04/2011 17:29

I watched that, and then used the links to get me to her conference at Mind - about hour and half long but interesting :)

If you get Sky Atlantic but missed it, it is on Sky Anytime till Monday.

CinnamonPretzel · 06/05/2011 18:07

I've ordered some of her books to read during my non existent down time.
Also the 'sensational kids' sensory book... keep me going for a while.

Ben10 "different but not less" says it all really doesn't it; I'll be borrowing it!
