I am looking for some advice - For the last few nights my DS (ASD 9) has had difficulty getting to sleep at night. He gets himself worked up into a state as he says he hears voices in his head shouting/laughing and they prevent him from getting to sleep. He is cuurently in MS school but has always struggled both academically and socially. Is this an anxiety issue and has anyone out there had experience of this? Am rather concerned to say the least. Thanks

please dont panic it is scary but your not alone, it prob is anxiety my ds started getting this and seeing things too i believe after seeing CAMHS its from lack of sleep but should deffinately be checked out he might be having night terrors too which is common but very scary for them see the gp or whoever your health profeshional is atm and ask for a ref to CAMHS and id he needs meds to help sleep they also can the px that . i have to admit first time my ds woke screaming ( he does that a lot) and then after months of hardly any really good deep sleep he started saying he saw and heard things i myself was terrified but CAMHS even while on waiting list give you a number to ring in meantime for advice, HTH try and not stress yourself as he will feel more stressed too good luck

I used to hear voices etc when it was evening - I used to spend every weekend at my Dads and remember crying because I couldn't stop them. I think it was due to over-tiredness. I can feel/hear it now (just through remembering) but it is REALLY hard trying to explain it - even now I'm an adult!
I had it once, recently but if it is due to tiredness, I suppose you'll have to find a way of relaxing your DS a little while before bed so that his brain calms.
Obv as last post - still get it checked. :)

My DD1 hears voices in her head when she's very anxious. She hears people talking and laughing as if they're in another room close by. She also hears footsteps and people moving around. CAMHS explained it as an ASD thing linked to a different type of imagination and are not at all worried about it. They will only be concerned if the voices start saying bad things to or about her.

Both my girls also hear loud or unpleasant noises they've heard during the day repeated in their heads later on. These are often screams from the playground or teachers shouting and can replay on a loop while they're trying to get to sleep. Again CAMHS feel this is an ASD thing and nothing to worry about.

You should raise it with CAMHS or perhaps the GP just to reassure yourself and him but also this could evidence that school is not meeting his needs and making him anxious.

HTH

Should have added that they both listen to audiobooks or music while going to sleep to block the voices.

DS also got this when very stressed about moving schools.

It disappeared when his stress levels went down. But I was worried at the time!

Sorry - I've just reread my post back and it reads very blunt and matter a fact; not so caring... I was trying to reassure :)

Stress.

My son, 10yrs, austism dx aged 4yrs. OCD/Tourettes dx last October. His anxieties rise up and up and up with stress and his "voices/obsessions" increase with them.

See your GP. Try to work out if it's about something new or just general stress of "life". Don't sit on it. My son started like that at 8yrs old. He is now a very poorly little boy.

Thanks ladies for your comments, you have reassured me whilst at the same time pointing me in the direction of GP to get it checked out which I shall do.

Wendihouse22 - thanks for the advice as I feel he has been struggling with anxiety for some time now (general stress of life) and would like to get it sorted if I can now, as I can see it leading to further issues as you mentioned. I am so sorry for your little boy, I hope that things turn around for him.

Yes, my DS was actually hearing his own 'inner voice'

I think kids with ASD 'think in pictures' a lot and aren't used to hearing an 'inner voice' - but at times of stress they do?
