I went to parents evening last thursday, and Ds2 teacher said she was asking for an assessment from LSS.
I knew DS was struggling.He had speech delay but has come on great with his speech,although still behind his peers.I think his speech is the least of his problem to be honest.DS is in year 1 at school.He isn't reading or writing apart from his name.He can't follow instructions,he seems to not really understand.
Has anybody got any advice?How long will we have to went for the assessment?What could be the problem and what help could DS get?
I know you won't be able to tell me what could be the problem all DC are different,but has anybody had the same or similar with their DC.
Thanks for any help.Feeling abit like i'm out of my depth.

Sorry, what does LSS stand for? And are you in England?

Sounds like you should also take him to the GP and ask for a referral to a child development paed or something like that.....

School can't and won't dx anything. In some LEAs they do refer to paeds, some area's they don't - but no harm in trying to get the referral yourself ASAP by going to the GP yourself.

Just tell her all of your concerns, and she'll refer you to the right specialist.....

LSS=learning support services.
We live in the west midlands.
DS is already on an IEP plus(individual education plan school action plus).

Thanks for your advice

Ok, well I'm guessing LSS then is going to be an Ed Psych who is going to make recommendations like 'needs instructions broken down', 'needs a synthetic phonics learn to read program' etc, etc.

The LSS will probably be qualified to dx dyslexia - and nothing else. And they might well dx dyslexia, because that is all they can dx.

He needs to be seen by a paed who can start to dx what the actual problem(s) might be. ( If it's not dyslexia. )
