Sorry...nappies again!!!

Sorry ladies, but Amelia is approaching 4 and I want to book an appointment with the HV to organise an application for the free nappies.

I thought I had heard on here that you have the option of either nappies or pull ups but not a combination of the two. Seeing as I have been attempting potty training for well over a year I thought that pull ups would be the best option for Amelia. At least that way she can attempt to be independant!
While visiting an indoor play centre at the weekend I briefly got chatting to another mum whose 9yr old DS has SN. She told me that they don't give pull ups!
I feel that putting Amelia back in nappies will be a step backwards and take away what little she has in self help toileting skills.
Can you please confirm what is available to you. I may need it to use as ammunition!

I recently asked my HV the same thing and she told me only nappies are available. Ds2 is nowhere near potty trained but he does wear pullups and tbh I think for a bigger child they are probably more comfortable so that is the end of that for us.

I'm pretty sure that my borough will give Pull-Ups, will check for you

I got told the other day that you have a fight on your hands to get pull ups!

We got sent some by mistake instead of nappies!! But they were only training ones that didn't hold much wee.

The nappies I got given were awful! I was a bit upset as my Sister said they were the same make as the Nursing Home she works in use

The Nurse as Ellie's School said that I wouldn't like them and that most Mums don't

They were big, bulky and worst of all plasticy, you know like they were years ago, make a crinkly sound.

Sorry to be negatiive, its just I was going to post about how awful the free nappies were when I saw your post!!

I am not ungrateful but Ellie and most of our Children have enough problems without having a huge, crinkly, bulky bottom!! We are having trouble getting jeans to go over!

Why couldn't thay just get pampers to do their lovely slim fitting pull ups in XXL??!!

lol Dingle, I couldn't think how to describe it!!

Actually it sounds more like a description of my backside than Ellie's nappies

It's not really a laughing matter to have some dignity of a decent pull up when all your class mates are "clean" but I just couldn't help myself!

We were given the choice of pull-ups or nappies. We chose nappies simply because of having to take off shoes and trousers every time he is changed when getting them on him in the morning is enough of a desperate struggle! If I had a little girl who could wear skirts I would probably have opted for pull-ups.

The nappies we get aren't bad, the same sort of fabric as pampers etc but the tapes do tend to tear off easily.

Think it depends what size your Child is.

Ellie is 4, if she was a little slimmer she would be able to have another type of nappy that is a much more 'normal' looking, more like a Pampers/Huggies one.

But she had to go onto the next type, which wasn't as nice. Has two big tapes , presume to stop it from being taken off and crinkly!

But of course, they might provide different nappies in different area's?

Sounds crap you guys can't have access to pull ups for your children. Not knowing a lot about this, is there a big cost implication for your local councils ? Is there an argument that they might cost more, but can be worn longer, or else are more likely to bring toilet training forward ?

I only ask in case a letter to Lord Andrew Adonis Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Schools (representing the Department in the House of Lords), or to the Minister for Children, Young People and Families (RT HON Beverley Hughes MP) might help your case...

(Got these names here ... maybe a nother department would be even more relevant ? I'm not a political beast, but it seems SN parents with late toilet trainers or children who will never toilet train deserve access to pull ups if they were desired.)

Hub2Dee, you are a mine of useful info and ideas. I certainly appreciate your interest in our battles! I'm visiting a friend tomorrow who has a 12 year old who is not fully toilet trained (not ASD but has lots of other issues inc endocrinological sp? which may mean he can't tell when he needs to go). I'll ask her as she is a VERY well informed mum.

nah... just a big gob. Your battle is everybody's battle. Well, anyone with a brain (and a heart, and NT kids) should realise it could so easily be them on the SN board. Anyway, glad to help with anything I can contribute. I imagine your friend has looked into lots of electronic products to trigger alerts based on pee / poo / muscle activity etc. Would be interested to hear any feedback.

I saw my friend today (who is the one I borrowed the eneurisis alarm from years ago) and she DOES get Pull-ups. She said she had a fight as she wanted Pull-ups and pads to go in the pants and they said she could only have 4 a day. But she argued that her son's needs must be met, whatever they are. She argued against nappies as being inappropriate over a certain age and impractical (sp?) with an older child as you have to lie them down to change a nappy. We didn't have long today as we had both DSs with us (on her big garden trampoline, heaven!) but I'll grill her further. I think we had some threads before and there was an organisation that specialises in this (it may even be me who gave the info!) and anyone could always try Fledglings.

I get both pull ups and nappies for my ds who is 10. The pull ups were terrible so now we get dry nights. I do think it depends where you live.

Noticed this thread had been bumped up again..out of interest, we still haven't got Amelia's nappies sorted!Gotta laugh....I think ATM, if I didn't laugh, I'd just sit down and cry my eyes out!

Must admit they don't leak, but I still sqeeze her into a slim Pampers pull up when she goes for her mainstream session!!

They just remined me of very old pampers before they changed into the sofeter material that is used nowadays

They are just a bit crinkly!! They are fine though and haven't leaked

and they are hard for a child to remove which I supose is the idea

They start at xxs and go up, not sure what to
