After banging my head against a brick wall with schools, LEA and not even parent partnership could help them resolve issues.School were having no luck not enough resources, lea carnt statement as not enough info from school. My/parent partnership request for specific info was stonewalled. Meanwhile school were trying to move my son to a short stay unit for help and the hospital wouldnt sign off on it as they reconed that school should have been doing their job not try to palm him off to somewhere else.AHHH!! I researched home education as my 9 year old son became so distaught and down about school that he started saying rather distressing things about himself. Enough was enough i am awaiting an appointment for camhs which will be here shortly as they think he may have aspergers. He has become so overly sensitive in many areas that even the occupational therapist was surprised what a major impact school has had on him.
The good news is that first thing on monday i dropped in a de-registartion letter to the school. I then started the process of de-schooling and asked my son what he would like to learn. He had some re-markable ideas and was happy for most of the day doing differnet tasks. I fit in the sensory excersies, physio exercises, eye tracking exercises etc. He was happy with no health issues or negative comments and was totally relaxed. The LEA phoned today saying they had recieved request for de-registration and would send me out a policy/welcome pack for home educators.Surprising enough its the first time i havent had to battle in the last year or so.Hope this shows that all hope is not lost!

Good for you

FlaminGreatGallah · 22/03/2011 19:20

Oh, good to know it's an option. DS is autistic and is about to receive the world's worst statement from what I can gather Hmm and I worry so much about my DD at Secondary. She is NT but has a medical condition which means that one act of mild violence could be life-threatening. Not that I particularly want to study for my exams again but needs must...

All the very best to you and DS Smile

If my dd2 didn't also have sn then I would home educate dd1 without a doubt

Eloise73 · 22/03/2011 20:04

It is something we have researched a lot and if for whatever reason our DD is not doing well at school/coping etc and is not getting what she needs we would not hesitate to homeschool her or look into doing flexi-schooling so she does perhaps mornings at school and afternoons homeschooled.

Well done for taking the initiative! Do check out homeschool websites and blogs on the internet, there are so so many wonderful resources out there that offer support, guidance, lessons plans, ideas etc. Some very good online schools as well if you want that extra support with more complex lessons etc.

Good luck :)

Smile definitely part of my back-up plan. So glad to hear it has gone well for you. Keep us up dated.

Well done you, I hope it continues to go well for you.Smile

I always have home ed in the back of my mind for Dd3 but sadly can't afford to not work at the moment.

Delighted it's working for you Kathy.

I deregistered ds (now 12 with AS) over two years ago and it's been a blessing. He's really come on in leaps and bounds because I can spend time working on the therapy issues where he needs most support, which he wasn't getting in school. It's surprising how much a child can learn academically once they're calm and settled in a supportive environment.

A word of advice - watch out for the 'six month blip' when they start to push the barriers Smile. Don't be fooled into thinking it will always be this smooth, as the novelty does wear off for some children.

Good luck Smile.

Thank you everyone for your wonderful comments, it is re-assuring to know that there are other families out there who have had similar experiences of how the mainstream school system can fail horribly. I will keep my eye on how well my son does coming up to the six month mark, we just take one day at a time. I have been doing lots of research and there are quite a lot of excellent sites for advice and resouces as well as home education group activities.I will keep everyone informed on how it goes!
