they have just been covering this on primary but theres one aspect of it that worries me with DS is because he hates water he has sensory issues and has never liked it , if some of your dc's are the same what do you do, my DS always comes home with the water bottle in his bag, school say they remind them Hmm but if DS hates it hes not going to want to drink it is he he doesnt like flavoured water either ,even at home i have to consistantly remind him to drink or he would go all day without, such a worry as its getting warmer already and he came out sweating and gasping today.

Sorry mad. We have a similar problem at school because they are only allowed water. Is there anything your DS likes to drink?

MADABOUTTHEBOY2000 · 22/03/2011 18:27

only fresh orange , milk or juice diluted orange flavour without aspartame tbh he would need the teacher to remind him at least once in morning perhaps after break and ahgain a bit after lunch as he really doesnt realise hes thursty till you ask are you thirsty iykwim

dd1 is a non-drinker.

she is not doing too badly at the moment, and will drink reasonably well, but we have had some corking times with her - she stopped drinking completely (honestly, not a single drop of liquid passed her lips) for 9 months. that was very hard.

what kind of things will your ds eat, Mad?

I kept dd1's fluid intake up by giving her soup, curries, overcooked rice, yoghurt, jelly etc - it all counts, and the important thing is to avoid constipation.

woudl your ds consider ice lollies?

I know none of this helps for time at school, but if you can top him up beofr ehe goes, and be waiting with something for him when he finishes it is a start.

what is it about drinking he doesn't like?

dd1 cannot bear to have liquid touch her lips, even now when she is is on a relatively good phase with her drinking.

she drank juice out of cartons for ages, the lunch box sized ones, with a straw, and now has diluted odwn juice form a Camelbak sports bottle.

we played lots of water games with dd1 when she was on drinking strike - eg squirting water into each others mouths using a 5ml syringe, or dripping water using a soaked sponge/flannel - very messy, but not so much of a problem when it is warm!

It has been a long slow road with dd1, but she usually drinks about 300-400ml a day now, which is really good for her.

Your poor old DD, silverfrog! Warm water games sound like a fab idea. Glad you're having a good phase.

Mad, is your DS allowed juice or milk at lunchtime? If so could the school ensure he drinks a good amount then, when the lunchtime supervisors are in charge? Then as silver suggests drink b4 school and something when he comes out? At least he'll have had something.

if your ds is haivng real problems with drinking - get it documented (eg get it onrecord at gp's that you are finding it hard to get enough liquid into him)

once it becomes a need, the school has no ability to refuse to allow special measures (ie trying to stick to a water only policy) - you can always try quoting the DDA at them.

we had a tough time for a while when dd1 was baout 4 as her pre-school was insiting on water and nothign else. this was just as she was exiting her drinking strike, and I was buggered if I was goign to have them stuff her up again, so I made a fuss, and she was allowed her carton of juice at snack, while all the other childrne had water. to refuse could have cause dher harm, especially in the summer.

dd2 won't drink plain water so she has diluted juice. we put it in a none see through bottle so it doesn't cause any problem with the other children. The school have not made any fuss about it. I think they share our view that it would be a waste of time to get hung up on something like this. I can't believe schools can't adapt this rule for dc with special needs!

EllenJane1 · 22/03/2011 18:56

I've heard of DC getting around a water only and clear bottle only rule by putting the clear flavoured water drink in or lime juice cordial. My DS is allowed juice or squash at lunch time but only water in class. Not a big problem for us therefore.

ty thats a godo idea silverfrog i may do that if he doesnt improve hes not allowed milk or juice no, and wouldnt entertain anything too cold like ice lollies ill atm he has a drink before and after directly and then i try two more during the late aft early evening hes still in pullups so no liquid after 8 or he leaks, so i think ill see the docs atm i cheat and do it very weak but he still wont drink as he likes more flavour in it than that he doesnt like the clear flavour water i tried that saw it on mn but no go his diets so rigid there isnt much liquid in it except now and again he goes off peanut butter and back to porridge so gets milk in that too

We're having problems with ds and drinking at school. The teacher is working really hard with us and him though Smile. She's playing games every day to get him to drink. On days when she forgets he comes home with a full water bottle. We are now allowed to send in juice for him as long as its not in a clear bottle. He doesn't tell anyone so its not a problem.
