I finally recieved the report for DS1.

There are some parts that make no sense to me tbh. But the main one is this

he needs support in relation to his anxiety, socialising, behaviour and learning to prevent secondary educational and social-emotional difficulties.

Now I have not nor have the school seen evidence of any problem with his learning except in Maths.
The thing that I don't understand is he is in the top set for every subject so why do they think he needs extra support with his learning?

Sorry just confused.

its not clear in relation to the learning is it, maybe they only mean in the math or that although doing well in other subjects they feel socially he needs more help , can you ring and ask?

Could it be that they think he needs a greater amount of support around socail skills, behaviour and anxiety, as they feel these areas could have an impact on his learning in the long-term.

The fact that it says 'secondary' educational and social-emotional difficulties seems to imply they think learning problems could potentially arise out of the other issues.

Eg my ds finds teamwork really difficult and needs a lot of support to get through it. If your ds is the same, due to social/communication issues then he might need learning support in that area. Another thing my ds struggles with is handling other children in the confined space of the classroom, he can be reactive to them over seemingly small things. Obviously this would impact both his and their learning.

Like your ds, mine is in top set for everything, but in these examples, its not his academic or learning skills that are the problem, its his social/communication and self-regulation skills. He needs adult guidance in both situations in order to facilitate effective learning.

Its definitely wooly wording though. I'd be inclined to call and ask for clarification. We have had the wording changed on both ds's Ed Psych and dx reports to make it more transparent.

I have called them and am waiting for a call back. Why is it always the way?

Moose, You have basically described my DS there. So maybe it is social skills they are looking at supporting him with.

A lot of school work in primary is done as small group work or with talk partner pairs. DC are taught how to be good team workers and how to 'magpie' ideas from their peers to increase their own skills and knowledge. It may be that your DS struggles with these areas which then affects his learning despite his IQ. It may also be that this type of learning will become more important as they get older.

But TBH the comment needs clarification from the author of the report as we're just guessing otherwise.

they're saying he needs support to help with his levels of anxiety and emotional issues which can get in the way of him forming social relationships and accessing his learning appropriately

how he is doing academically is not relevant in this phrase I don't think

does that sound like your child?
