My MP's response about stopping the DLA mobility to people in residential care

The Government?s work has unveiled that the current support for the mobility needs of disabled people in residential care is not working. What has become obvious from speaking to disabled people and organisations is that there is a lack of clarity about funding leading to confusion about who should provide what. This is not helped by a variety of different legal duties and contract responsibilities which in practice means that mobility provision is at best patchy.

However, speaking to disabled people and looking at reports like MENCAP?s Don?t Limit Mobility, the Government will now review mobility provision in care homes as part of its wider reform of DLA. This is because a review will allow the Government to put in place proper support for care home residents that takes full account of their individual needs and puts clear duties in place to safeguard the vulnerable.

In listening to the experiences of disabled people and their families, it is clear that the current system is not working in the way it is supposed to. The Government remains committed to removing the overlaps in provision and making the changes that are needed but it recognises that it is important that this is done correctly and reviewing this will give the Government the evidence base needed to make changes.

I want to assure you that those who are genuinely sick, disabled or retired have nothing to fear. This Government does not regard caring for the needy as a burden, but as a proud duty.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.

What?! What does that mean? Removing overlaps means removing funding. What a weasel.

exactly, load of rubbish

I think the big problem for people like us is that we don't necessarily need a mobility car and all that goes with it, but without higher rate mobility DLA we can't get a blue badge, Taxicard, congestion zone exemption, Freedom Pass. If the stinking council would give us those things, although DS can walk, then I wouldn't have worked like a dog to get hr mobility, grrrr.

I got exactly the same letter from my mp looks like standard issue that means diddly squat, I dont think they give a toss about listening to disabled people all they care about is saving money, overlaps in provision!!! many are lucky if they get and provision.

Ah, so it's only the non-disabled young healthy scroungers in residential care that are going to lose heir transport. That's all right then. Hmm
