Hi everyone, ive just received the report from the the private SALT i instructed for Tribunal.

Her recommendations are:-

 A high level of individual support within the classroom to address language processing, receptive and expressive language difficulties and promote social interaction and co-operative working.

 Social communication and interaction skills work in a small group on a weekly basis following a social communication programme designed and monitored by a specialist speech and language therapist on a half termly basis.

 A block of speech and language therapy delivered by a speech and language therapist and observed by Ds's Learning Support Assistant. This should run for 6 weeks for a minimum of 30 minutes per session.

 A speech and language therapy programme that is designed and monitored by a speech and language therapist on a half termly basis to be delivered by ds?s Learning Support Assistant for a minimum of three times per week.

 Targets for receptive, expressive and social communication skills to be incorporated into ds ?s IEP and addressed across the curriculum.

 Speech and language therapist to be present at IEP review meetings on a termly basis.

 Speech and language therapist to be present at ds ?s annual review and present an updated report on progress.

 Close liaison between school and home so that speech, language and social communication skills are transferred to the home setting.

Can these be improved upon, are they specify enough?

For each one think about what it would look like, then get that to be written down.

A high level of support? what does that mean? What does high mean? What does level mean? What does support mean?

How small is a small group. What is the maximum size? Are they talking class as opposed to assembly, or are they talking 2-3 children. Can these children be others with communication difficulties or do they need to have good skills to model

etc etc.

Nice to see you back btw

I think an independent SLT would recommend that your ds had weekly sessions of direct therapy from a SLT for 45 mins to be observed and then practised 3 times a week in the classroom by a higher level slt trained TA.

This is probably around what you should be aiming for.

flyingmum · 17/03/2011 16:49

All depends what you are aiming for. If you are aiming for special school which includes SALT provision you might need something as rednoise suggests as well. However, these people are used to writing these things for tribunal and I think my son had something very similar.

No mainstream school is going to be able to provide this.

RedNoise · 17/03/2011 16:50

Flying, my ds gets this at mainstream.

Claw3 · 17/03/2011 17:19

Thanks Rednoise and Flying.

Ds attends a MS school, but they will be building an ASD unit soon. Apparently the SENCO commented for 'children more severe than ds'

Ds can cope quite well in MS, but with expert specialist provision, i suppose that is what im aiming for.

Claw, hows your ds getting on in his new school. Have things improved. Has the self harm stopped?

Claw3 · 17/03/2011 18:10

He is 100% happier Rednoise and is less anxious, the self harming hasnt stopped but it is becoming less frequent. Thank you for asking.

Although we are experiencing a similar problem at his new school, they are finding it difficult to identify his difficulties due to his passive nature.

first thoughts o n glancing through - being distracted by dd2, so only a quick look! - was: the S&L programme to be delivered by the LSA - how much time shoudl be spent 3 tims a week? 2 mins not good, 20 mins much better Smile

really good to see you back - glad your ds has settled a bit, but sorry he is still struggling. dd1 was always so difficult to fathom due to passivity too, it's a real bugger.

Claw3 · 18/03/2011 08:02

Hi Silver and thanks, i have emailed the SALT asking for it to be made more specific and given some examples.

and yes school have told the experts that go in, ds is doing fine and not struggling with anything, making friends etc, etc.

But when observed he just sits passively, not joining in and getting very little work done. During formal assessment his scores range from 99 centile to 0.4 centile, so i can see how school could overlook in a class of 30. He manages to mask his difficulties quite well in order to not stand out.

I have received a reply from the SALT, she is saying it is not within her remit to specify the number of hours or time of LSA support, is this correct?

(although she has now amended 'small group' max of 4)
