Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

DD had an appointment with the school counsellor today. It didn't go well...

This was suggested back at the beginning of December. 3 months later she had her first meeting.

From what she has shouted shrieked ranted said apparently she sees things too black or white and counselling won't help her.

I give up.

What age is your dd? Does she have a dx or asd?

HelensMelons · 14/03/2011 17:10

is she waiting for an assessment for asd?

IndigoBell · 14/03/2011 17:22

Yes. A counseller probably won't help if she has ASD :(

Yes some will, there are ways of working with the difficulties around the "black and white" thinking, cbt is quite successful or some cbt strategies. Was the referral through CAMHS?

We were told that counselling and CBT etc can be tricky with children with ASD because they lack the necessary levels of self-awareness and introspection that it requires.

That said, ds's EP (brought in due to mega anxiety around school) has used some of the basic CBT techniques (around recognising how his body feels when he has different emotions and then trying to apply appropriate strategies for dealing with those feelings) and its been very beneficial for him.

She did say though that she thinks they went as far as they could with him and that full blown CBT was unlikely to be very successful, but might be possible with a very high level of support throughout the process from a trusted adult - so either a parent or, in school, perhaps a 1-1 LSA.

What were they hoping to achieve with the counselling?

AtYourCervix · 14/03/2011 17:39

yes, through cahms (who have also given up on her)

I'm through with school.

Have planted the seeds of possibly jacking it in and looking at on-line schools. I'm pointing her in the direction and letting her have a think about it.

What were your expectations of counselling for dd, what were dd's expectations? Can they be achieved in any other way?
