Precocious Puberty?

Hi everyone,

As most of you will know DS has recently developed anxieties and we can't really pinpoint why. His sensory issues are magnified ( i thought because of the stress he was experiencing with the anxiety)

However over the weekend I've noticed that he has lots of long curly hairs on his scrotum. They are fine but have suddenly sprouted from nowhere.

My gut is telling me that I should get his hormone levels checked as it all does seem a bit coincidental - and I'm not a big believer in coincidence. Don't want to be over reacting but thought I'd ask you guys first before I email the paed. Luuk is due to have bloods done at the end of the month anyway so would need to cause him any extra distress to get it checked.

Any comments very gratefully received. xx

P.S: I have left him in school this morning crying his eyes out as he wanted me to stay! This has NEVER happened before, not even when he first went to nursery

Hi shaz i know i have a dd but we are going through similar.Hormones are kicking off big time causing seizures, breathing abnormalities and insecurities.Yesterday my dd just burst into tears for no reason and she hates me to be out of her sight. She likes me near her where she can see me at all times at cartain times of the month.hth.

Thanks for that. Have you spoken to the docs? What age is your DD? Luuk has only just turned 6!

Hi shaz yeh have spoken to the docs they have put dd on another anti epileptic to be taken during the hormonal part of the month.DD is 12 and has not started periods big time when they do start they say they can help to manage them but until then i just have to ride it out and make sure she can always see me which is slightly difficult.Luuk does seem a little young for hormonal stuff going on but would imagine not impossible.I would speak to docs about it.

Have sent them an email and started keeping a diary of his anxiety/emotional stuff. xx

Yeh we keep a diary of pretty much everything nowadays but they often show up patterns so are worth doing.good luck x

My DD who is only just 8 suddenly sprouted public hair when she was 7, I mentioned it to our GP who sent her for a scan to measure her ovaries etc and it came back as normal, not sure if they can scan boys but it might well be worth asking so they dont have to do bloods?

EllenJane1 · 14/03/2011 14:23

I believe boys do get a big testosterone boost at about age 6 which is entirely normal, but may explain why your DS is so 'hormonal.' I'm sure someone will know better than me.

Thanks Joe. He needs to habe bloods done at the end of the month anyway so it could be done then - he has very very difficult access so needs to be sedated for blods etc as it usually takes loads of attempts to get any!

Thanks EllenJane, that's reassuring. x

precocious perburty does exist and is worth getting ckecked out especially if the behaviours dont settle very quickly.

IndigoBell · 14/03/2011 15:10

I can't think of any other reason he'd be getting hairy at 6 :(

shaz298 · 14/03/2011 15:40

Hoping that at least if it is that, then it's a reasonable explanation for the sudden onset of all his anxiety and insecurities. And I know they can slow it down. Not too bothered if he's a bit shorter than he would have been. His Dad's tall and I'm really short to there is a good chance he'd be not greatly tall anyway.
