Hard to explain, lol, son age 6.5 is still doing stairs with 1 foot on step then other foot on that same step and so on, going down stairs takes ages. I do tell him to walk down 1 foot on each step but he says he cant

Dd1 is 7 and struggle with steps, she has just been referred to a pead for possible low muscle tone and hypermobile joints. I think most 6 year onlds can manage steps so i would be talking to your GP about a referral.

IndigoBell · 13/03/2011 10:57

Walking down steps like this is a classic sign of dyspraxia

brandy77 · 13/03/2011 11:02

he has been referred to a developmental paed for possible aspergers, thats what an ed psyche thinks. So is it something he can be taught then? or will he use stairs like a small child until hes a adult? sounds a daft question but i cant find anything on goodle

Dyspraxia and Aspergers often go together :(

You also need to see an OT.

brandy77 · 13/03/2011 11:08

Oh i see Sad and what with his complex medical probs, poor kid. The EP report said that when i get the referall to the paed that i should ask about an OT referall. Do you think i should mention the stair walking to the EP in the morning when she comes or is that irrelevant to her? She said if my son is compliant she would be playing a few games and getting him to draw (he hates drawing so no he wont do that!). Shes got to assess him here as he isnt in school

Dd1 has a dx of AS but has lots of dyspraxic traits. We are still fighting for OT Sad.

IndigoBell · 13/03/2011 11:19

I would mention it.

Good luck.

brandy77 · 13/03/2011 11:20

marne, its a fight full stop isnt it, hope you get your OT in the end. Thanks indigo, il write it on my list to mention in the morning.x

Its taken us a year to get referral to pead, it seems as dd1 already has a dx of AS that they dont want to dx anything else.

brandy77 · 13/03/2011 14:40

oh thats not good marne Sad my son already has 2 paeds up london for his medical probs, ive been told that it will take 16weeks to get an apt, hope it is within that time frame because i need to know whats wrong with him developmentally so i can get advise about his behaviour, all ive been told is too treat him as if he has Aspergers, ive been doing that for 2 years Confused

We managed to get a dx for AS when she was 4 (it took 2 years from gp referring her) at the time her problems with movement were not as noticable as they are now although thinking back she was a late walkier and would not walk outside until she was 4.5 (we asumed this was due to her AS and sensory problems), now she is getting picked on at school for not being able to run fast and struggling with day to day things like steps. Its only after looking on here that i realised that AS and dyspraxia often go together.

Good luck, i hope you manage to get things moving faster than we have.

madwomanintheattic · 13/03/2011 18:29

has he any sight issues? have also heard of dcs doing this with specific visual problems (can't remember exact details but a little bell went off in my head Grin)

physio and ot worked very hard on stairs with dd2 - she needed a rail on both sides (still does really - at 7 she can just about manage with one rail but it's slow going). she has full body low tone from cp though.

samira837 · 13/03/2011 19:07

My ds is 3 on the 17th and he is ok with stairs but im waiting for a dx SLI or Social and comunicaion disorder

brandy77 · 13/03/2011 19:51

thanks for the good luck marne Smile
madwoman, no he hasnt got sight issues, took him for eye test last week as hes been saying that the floor looks like its on the ceiling, eyes were fine Smile ah your little girl is doing great with the stairs if she has CP.

Its weird because my son can catch a ball very well, he has good hand to eye coordination with table tennis/badminton, plays footie a lot and dribbles the ball around but put him on stairs and hes shockingly slow. He bum shuffled as a little one and never learn to roll over from his back, he would just lay there like a stranded beetle, even at over 2 years old you could lay him on his back and he was stuck there, he can roll now Smile and do a headstand!

My ds was going up and down stairs like this until a few months ago - he is nearly 7! He has no SN but just couldn't master doing the stairs properly until recently for some reason Confused

DD has low tone in her trunk and hypermobility and struggles with stairs too.

brandy77 · 13/03/2011 22:48

ah thats interesting, thanks smashingtime, perhaps my son is a later learner Smile

DS2 still goes up and down stairs slowly, the way the OP mentions or even going down on his bum slowly like a toddler. He is being assessed for dyspraxia as well as other difficulties, so I've just attributed it to this. Besides, he falls so frequently, I'm happy to have him go up and down the stairs carefully. Grin
