Hello all. Welcome MAD. I'm pretty new too. It's been a pretty traumatic week here so I'm looking forward to a nice quiet w/e. We have a transition conference for DS2 going to secondary next week so are getting all our questions ready with some help from here.

I can't remember sex either but I learnt the BSL sign for it on here yesterday, so maybe? You never know. Wink

Can't be arsed to cook so DH is bring sent out to Kentucky to bring back the boys tea. Maybe curry for us.

EllenJane1 · 11/03/2011 18:07

Sorry, superfantastic, great house news. Like the Reggie Perrin ref.

superfantastic · 11/03/2011 18:18

What ref? (dim) ;)

Good luck with the transition conference Ellen and welcome to you both! Grin

I can still vaguely remember what sex is...DS is only 1! :)

Think I was thinking of supergreat. Sorry, bit dim.

Ineedalife · 11/03/2011 18:33

We had parents eve yesterday, I spoke to the teacher for all of 20 seconds and then spent loads of time going through Dd3's books making notes and thoroughly annoying her. LOL.

All of you who have read about my trials and tribulations with school will understand why I enjoyed this sooo muchGrin.

Also did my last volunteer help at school today, and have decided not to speak to the HT/SENCO without a witness.

Can you tell what kind of a week I have had?Hmm

intothewest · 11/03/2011 18:40

moosemama · 11/03/2011 20:27

Congratulations on the house Super.

Welcome MAD.

Sorry about the traumatic week Ellen.

Carrot, well done your ds for managing to work his way through instead of melting down.

Ineed, sounds like its been a tough week for your as well. Def a Wine and chocolate night for you.

I'm another one with a hurting brain that's far too tired to think, having spent the day trying to get my head around ds's IQ profile and the implications/impact of his visual and processing issues on his schooling. Confused

Ds2 continues to have bizarre health issues that are perplexing the docs, which is a worry, because I thought he was improving.

Dh and I seem to have done nothing but bicker all week each time ending with the immortal words 'we need to make time to have a proper talk' - like that's ever going to happen! Hmm

He's also got a second interview for a job which is too far away commuting-wise and whilst improving our financial situation will drastically affect all of our lives - and not in a good way. So we are fighting about that as well.

I have already stuffed far too much chocolate for one day, and my girth is ever expanding at present, so I'd better give it a miss this evening.

lostinwales · 11/03/2011 20:37

Happy Friday everyone! I have had a fab week as DS1 won the county eiseddfod in the black and white photo competition and therefore goes into the national competition in June. He won't sing on stage, can't write a story or make crafty things but can do wonders with a camera, yay for the new category! HUGE ego boost for a boy living in the land of song and rugby when he can do neither!

Super about the house super you must be so excited.

at everyone else as we went out for tea to celebrate and I had Wine rather too early.

EllenJane1 · 11/03/2011 21:05

Sorry DSs have been a worry this week moose. Can do without DH adding his two penneth as well, I bet.

Really pleased for your DSs success Wales. Was that before or after his examination of the reletive benefits of the cafes on Snowdon?

lostinwales · 11/03/2011 21:14

Well the joy of it being photography is he can be judged whilst he is somewhere else lecturing discussing Snowdon and it's cafes! Still haven't got to the bottom of how he knew all that, mind you his yugioh cards came today so he hasn't spoken anything resembling English for hours. Found anyone to use your sign language on yet?

Ineedalife · 11/03/2011 21:15

Hi again all... thanx for the support and the offers of Wine and chocolate. I will take the chocolate thanx but noWine for me I am teetotal[sp].

Am actually feeing quite good about the decisions I have made this week so something positive to think aboutSmile.

Congrats on the house superGrin.

Thecarrotcake · 11/03/2011 21:16

< just another tired wave at all>

moosemama · 11/03/2011 21:46

I have bizarrely ended up on an American forum for Gifted and Talented children. I was searching for someone who could help me make better sense of ds's WISC-IV results and how his visual and processing issues might have skewed the results and was told that there are a couple of posters on there that are really good at analysing the scores.

Have met one very nice lady who's recently developed an interest in the life of Temple Grandin and two other people who very kindly replied to my post - which obviously had nothing to do with G&T kids. Other than that my post has now been read a the grand total of 215 times since tea time today - apparently all by people who would have given me a big fat Biscuit if they'd only had an icon for it. Grin Oh well, it was worth a try.

Ineedalife · 11/03/2011 21:57

Moose... fwiw I think a visual processing issue would impact on the wisc test[if I am thinking of the same test]. Dd1 did that[amongst others] when she was younger and I am sure there was a fair amount of shape turning and picking the right shape for the space etc. There was a whole section on spatial stuff.

We have only recently found out that Dd3 has below average visual processing skills and lst night at parents evening I found in her book that she unable to draw the reflection of a shape of to turn a shape in her head and draw what it will look like. [Although of course she has no issues in maths] Hmm

Feel free to ignore me if I am talking C..p, it was quite a long time ago.Grin

moosemama · 11/03/2011 22:08

Thanks Ineedalife, ds has problems tracking left to right as well as poor visual-motor integration and spatial awareness.

From what I can make out this would have brought down his Perceptual Reasoning Score and that coupled with a low processing speed makes the overall score non-representative of his actual ability/intelligence.

It sounds like I'm hung up on his overall IQ, which I'm not, I just want to get a clear picture of what his strenghts and weaknesses are and how his weaknesses are affecting or cancelling out his strengths, so I can work out if its possible to mitigate it with either some sort of home based training programme or external support.

I suppose it might all become a bit clearer when he's had his visual assessment. We were supposed to get him in at the GP for a referral this week - but as usual we ran out of days. Hmm

Ineedalife · 11/03/2011 22:23

Yes I think you are right about it lowering his scores, sadly no test is perfect and they don't take into account that he sees things differently.

Dd1 had an IQ test when she was 6, she was not doing well at school and was disruptive and very challenging at home, people told me it was because she was bright so we paid for her to be tested. It turned out that her IQ is in the 99th percentile.

However that knowledge did not really help us, it didn't inprove her behaviour or get her better support at school.

She has difficulties with Theory of mind and empathy amognst other things. We are convinced she has an ASD but now at 22 it is unlikely she will ever get a DX.

I can totally get why you are looking into these things and at the end of the day it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

You are doing your best for your Ds and that is all any of us can do.

Good luck with the visual assessment.

I know what you mean about running out of days, I am supposed to be getting Dd3 back to the GP to get a referal to someone about her joints, she is getting pain in her ankles, is hypermobile but has been discharged by OTHmm.

Am off to bed now will check back here again tomorrowSmile.
