Any secondary schools for children with autism offering creative curriculum?

My son is 10 and he is moderatelly autistic with ADHD. He is a great talker, but having difficulties in text/ context comprehension and flexible social use of language. His language can be controlling and repetative and he stimms quite a bit, espec. when he is excited or upset. On the other hand, he is bright and if right strategies used, he can learn and make progress.

Unfortunately, despite huge efforts, his Primary school education so far has been hit and miss.

I am anxious to find a right secondary school for my son. Ideally it would be a school with a creative approach to teaching childen with autism providing curriculum relevant to my son'd needs. So, more emphases on social communication, self help and independence skills, learning through using music, drama, play and physical activities, and less numeracy and literacy drills and abstract learning...If you know of such a school, please let me know. Many thanks.

Hi MariaU.

I don't really have an answer to your question, but I assume it would need to be either a special school or a special unit within a mainstream school. Normal state MS wouldn't fit the bill. Maybe Steiner? Although they can be very unstructured which doesn't suit many on autistic spectrum.

You may get a better response on the SN children's board as it is much busier. If you want people to recommend a particular school you'll need to put your area in your text. Maybe not in the title so not to put people off even looking as they may have good general advice not local to you. Good luck. Smile

We are trying to set up school which is for children aged 11-16 with high functioning autism that have been subject to bullying.

We will specialise in Art, Drama and Music but will offer GCSE's in most subjects.

take a look at www.youthsound.org for more details.

Good luck with your search!
