Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Hmmm okay, so ds seems to have a new interest.

:) moose at the nt lining up things, dd did that in front of the behavioural therapist who was seeing ds! ( with fridge magnets , in size order)

auntevil · 10/03/2011 17:08

Oh but Carrot - do you know what comes after binary (evil shudder)?! Grin

EllenJane1 · 10/03/2011 17:16

I don't think I want to know. Bet it's not good. BTW DS3 says that the Nintendo Virtual Boy (in red and black only) was the first console to have Super Mario tennis! Someone help me please....

Thecarrotcake · 10/03/2011 17:24

Aunt, shhhhhhhhhh :o

ellen, apparently your ds could well be correct, according to both my ds's

personally I don't have a clue!

moosemama · 10/03/2011 18:34

Ds concurs, Mario Tennis was apparently available from launch on the Virtual Boy (Red and Black). Which was launched in July 1995 in Japan and August 1995 in America. Grin

EllenJane1 · 10/03/2011 18:51

No, you don't understand. Help me please to get away. Enough, enough. Grin

moosemama · 10/03/2011 18:59

Sorry, you have to stay there and listen and nod and smile and say 'Hh that's interesting.' and 'Really? Well I didn't know that.' even though he's not really listening - its mandatory! Grin

EllenJane1 · 10/03/2011 19:08

Nod and smile, nod and smile. Got it!

Off to fetch DH, DS2 and DS3 from swimming now.

TotalChaos · 10/03/2011 19:18

At least tis cheap, a lot cheaper than schleich horses or bakugan.....and we will cast a discreet veil over ds' disney princess collection

Goblinchild · 10/03/2011 19:23

I love this thread, it's not even outside the box, it's complete oblivion that any box exists at any time in any place.
Teach him Makaton as well as the binary. Grin

Thecarrotcake · 10/03/2011 19:24

Ellen... :) please YouTube the song 'hotel california' by the eagles

you may never leave!

Moose I'm so glad the nod and agree method is standard, I always feel a bit bad about doing it to ds2. But then I just figure he actually doesn't pick up on facial expressions or tone of voice any how, so he never knows.

moosemama · 10/03/2011 19:32

Carrot, I know what you mean. I spent so many years trying really hard not to do it, but its impossible when they are talking 'at' you and not actually stopping to find out whether you are a) interested or b) listening.

I decided in the end that he didn't seem to notice whether I'm interested or not (as you say, he doesn't pick up on the cues) and as long as I retain enough information to be able to have the odd proper conversation with him about his favourite things, he's happy.

EllenJane1 · 10/03/2011 19:34

Hi,I'm back, for a bit, until DS1 needs picking up.

Does anyone else have a Puffle infestation?

Thecarrotcake · 10/03/2011 19:52

Ellen, only from dd, so it's a coper! :)

moose yup, and I love the talking at you thing really, it was that that basically got us our dx lol, I kept saying to people that something just sat a bit to quirky with ds and no-one listened. Then eventually we met a professional who asked him one weeny question.... an hour later when he stopped speaking, having missed all the non verbal cues and missed the verbal attempts to get him to stop talking we had a referal to a MDT.
:)

goblin :) there's an idea! We still use a bit of it anyway, I may refresh myself and ds in it.
actually used it for ds1 who spoke rather late, ds2 just picked it up and so did dd ... ( and so did the dog on sit! Don't ask!)

ds1 remembers quite a lot, when he was doing his sports leader thing, he was working with year1s. He noticed a young lad off to the side and not joining in, reminded him of ds2, so he went over and signed to him.
The lad smiled and joined in and the 1-1 for the boy nearly fell over!

A spotty grungy teen taking the time and knowing how to sign :o
ds1s peers and teacher were stunned, so much so that I had a call from school to say what had happened!

What a lovely boy, carrotcake. My DS wouldn't take to Makaton, it was just as abstract as speech for him, which is a shame as DH and I have Stage 1 BSL from when my deaf godson lived nearby. (Before Children) But DH and I use it to talk about stuff we don't want the DSs to understand.

Thecarrotcake · 10/03/2011 20:15

Ellen :) @ private bsl

ds1 is lovely.. Just a bit lazy sometimes :) ( which is why he is now racing to get his gcse art sorted lol).

I can only say " I would like to make love to you tonight" in BSL ( don't ask :) it's the same as knowing it in itailan or german lol)

shame your ds hasn't taken to it though, I find it quite handy when ds2 doesn't want to speak.

OP posts:
EllenJane1 · 10/03/2011 20:20

We did try. But PECS worked for him, then on to speech soon after (well, about 6 months).

Funnily enough the lovely Deaf tutor we had for BSL didn't teach us the sign for making love, but BSL is usually pretty graphic, so I can guess! Unless it's just crossing your forearms across your chest?

Thecarrotcake · 10/03/2011 20:32

If I remember correctly, it's forarms knocking against each other lol

I have 1000 yugioh cards arriving from ebay tomorrow. Actually looking forward to it after this evenings discourse on the cafe at the top of Snowdon from first hut to current modern cafe including what happened to it in WW's 1 and 2! Personally would quite enjoy a bit of binary myself, currently doing an OU maths course for fun (what some ASD traits can be hereditary you say...)

EllenJane1 · 10/03/2011 20:46

Make is crossing your two forefingers and tapping them together. Platonic love is forearms crossed on your chest so I guess what you are describing is a combo! Phwoar!

EllenJane1 · 10/03/2011 20:50

That was a cross post, lostinwales. Blush Have you been on the narrow gauge railway? Back down the pig track?

lostinwales · 10/03/2011 20:55

We have never, ever, even been to Snowdon! I fear for the monologue we'd get if we did. Come to think of it I have no idea how he know so much about the cafe at the top, or why. Aren't ASD boys a joy!

I loved the cross post, you never know, that knowledge could come in very handy one day Grin

Thecarrotcake · 10/03/2011 21:18

:o @ losts post!

Ellen, I ought not get back in touch with the young man who taught me it.. I don't think dh would be happy :)
so we will stick to me thinking I've remembered correctly and you getting the jist lol

OP posts:
EllenJane1 · 10/03/2011 21:49

Google is a wonderful thing, lostinwales. And there was I thinking you were mountaineers. So I can guess how they found out about the cafe by I could never guess why!

So enough BSL for the evening, carrotcake? We'll draw a line under that one.

signandsmile · 11/03/2011 07:37

ellen and carrot how you sign it depends on the position you are hoping for.... IFSWIM Wink. Stage one doesn't tend to go that far... my stage two didn't either but obliging Deaf male friend filled in the details... Wink

{{ sign drifts back into memory.... Wink }}

moose my dh asks if your ds knows about PC engine, or is it just handheld games?
