Thanks for that. Will listen in.

Al1son · 09/03/2011 12:35

Sensationalist crap!

They aren't even bothering to differentiate between children with statements and those on a SEN register.

Thanks for nothing BBC!

SparkleRainbow · 09/03/2011 12:37

Oh missed it! Have they discussed SEN, Statements of SN? Or are we having a one size doesn't even come close to fitting all approach?

coppertop · 09/03/2011 12:39

It was completely rubbish.

JV didn't even pretend to be impartial, with all his "But don't you think that number's really high?" to anyone who had a child with SN.

And anyone with no experience of the system would have thought, from listening to this, that all children on the SEN register are automatically statemented.

Al1son · 09/03/2011 12:41

It's a free for all on how stupid it is to put label children as SEN for minor difficulties. Stupid examples where children have clearly been put on SA+ for some reason and they are talking about it as if these children have been given statements.

People like this make it much harder for parents whose children really need help.

Al1son · 09/03/2011 12:42

Have stopped listening now as I am getting too cross.

SparkleRainbow · 09/03/2011 12:43

Maybe I should be glad I missed it then. Yet again a missed opportunity to discuss the important issues around special needs. Sad

MarioandLuigi · 09/03/2011 12:44

I agree - he couldnt veil his obvious distaste and he used really rubbish, sensationalist examples.

He also doesnt seem to understand the difference between Special needs and Special education needs.

coppertop · 09/03/2011 12:45

Quick summary for anyone who missed it:

One parent phoned in to say their child was put on the register for not wanting to go on the climbing frame.

One parent phoned in to say their child was put on the register because they had a food allergy.

Much hand-wringing from JV about how terrible this was.

Parent phoned in to talk about her daughters being severely dyslexic and mentioned that she herself had been a teacher. JV asked "But as a teacher don't you think the number of children on the register is really high?"

SparkleRainbow · 09/03/2011 12:45

Where did the statistics which "inspired" the section come from anyway?

MarioandLuigi · 09/03/2011 12:48

They came from Ofsted I think.

time4chocolate · 09/03/2011 12:53

Sorry everyone - if I knew that was going to be the programme content I would not have even bothered posting the message on here in the first place - we have all heard enough of that sort of crap!!.

OP posts:
coppertop · 09/03/2011 12:56

It's not your fault it was rubbish. I blame JV.

Al1son · 09/03/2011 12:59

Don't apologise for having expectations of the BBC that they failed to live up to!

They're the ones who should be apologising Angry

SparkleRainbow · 09/03/2011 13:03

Absolutely don't apologise. I am very disappointed in JV though.

bettyboop63 · 09/03/2011 13:12

all this prejudism is really upsetting me (i know it does everyone) i had an incident of nasty prejudism by someone outside my DD(nt) school about the children that go to the SS next to their school all the political stuff going on because of the green paper and ive only reciently has a ASD moderate/severe DX after fighting the system twice (gave up after two years of being treated like dirt forst time round) them went through the system again thought i was getting somewhere my DS final statements due any second but listening to this had me first angry then in tears i feel so depressed i dont think i can take much more and tonights parents evening Sad please god let it be more uplifting

SparkleRainbow · 09/03/2011 13:14

Betty I hope parents evening is more more uplifting, we could all do with being uplifted.

coppertop · 09/03/2011 13:23

Best of luck for parents evening, Betty.

bettyboop63 · 09/03/2011 14:17

ty sparkle and you too coppertop he never totally settles he only started there after half term 9takes 6 months nnormally to get used to the teacher let alone the classroom or peers)this morning was a bad morning he was not at all happy tired maybe as hes not used to doing as much physical stuff as they do at SS i think hes enjoying it but fancied a day off this morning as he sounded like making excuses why he didnt like it at this school either Confusedhe had said it was better all the other times weve chatted about what he did today( usually he says cant remember ) then tells you half hour later something random so i do hope its more cheerful than parents consultations used to be they were always so negative/or condesending

MADABOUTTHEBOY2000 · 09/03/2011 16:45

i listened to this very upsetting

sugarcandyminx · 09/03/2011 21:20

It's on Iplayer, am just listening now and feeling Angry. Starts about 7 mins in.

wendihouse22 · 10/03/2011 09:35

Hardly an in depth discussion..... just paying the "days events" lip service I think.

One good aspect though.....is the plan incorporating "up to age 25". I often think how ridiculous it is that when kids leave education, it's as if they a) don't count anymore b) are "cured" or c) have ceased to exist.
